Has anyone successfully rented a U-Haul trailer with an ID.4? I needed a trailer for a weekend project, but the car wasn't in their system. They had pages of engineering specifications that needed to be provided before they would consider renting a trailer. In the end I was turned away and my project cancelled. Hopefully U-Haul will add the ID.4 to their database soon! If anyone else is counting on being able to rent from them, I'd suggest calling ahead to confirm.

You would not have that issue in the boon docks of Arkansas. The only requirement here is the right sized ball. But surely there are other places that rent trailers.

Shame you had to postpone your project, but don't you have other trailer rental options? It sounds like U-Haul is more bound by company procedure than a local / mom n pop equipment rental company.
There should be some mom & pop places that will rent, but it was already too late in the day to try to find other options. Hopefully U-Haul will update their database as they have a lot more variety than other smaller options. They needed WAY more than just a towing limit spec. They needed all kinds of vehicle information that I'm not even sure has been fully published.

U-Haul apparently has its own litigation risk-averse lawyers with probably good business reason. Hence they need to have full manufacturer specifications they can point to should things go awry. If there weren't so many frivolous cases brought to court by ambulance chasers representing irresponsible individuals the rest of us wouldn't have so many obstacles to just getting our work done. 😖

[yeah, I know, you're all tired of my typical aside, but the truth is out there.]

I phoned U-Haul customer service today and spoke with a rep. He took notes and said that he would pass along a request to add the ID.4 to their database. Meanwhile, he said that we should be able to go to a U-Haul Towing Center, and the manager should be able to examine and approve the vehicle for towing. I’ll call my local center tomorrow to verify.

Wow, thanks for following up with them! That would be great if a manager could temporarily override and even better once we're in the database.

You expect U-Haul to install some kind of temporary hitch and rent you the trailer without knowing if the ID.4 RWD software is trailer-friendly? Audi sent me a dire warning not to install a hitch on my 2020 Audi Q5-e PHEV AWD because the car’s software was not programmed to handle a trailer of any kind. The 2021 model had updated software to accommodate a dealer-installed hitch.

Everyone forgets that many new cars are complete integrated systems. You can’t necessarily safely bend them to do some random thing that isn’t explicitly supported.

Are you aware that all First Edition ID.4s came with a factory installed receiver? And trailer mode in the backup camera, etc.
