I haven’t been able to find a post on this, but I am having a real problem with my 2021 ID4 Pro (2 months old). Within the past week, 3 times the emergency braking function of the front assist technology has activated suddenly and without warning, jerking that car to a sudden stop and triggering the alarm on the console. The first two times I was behind another car at a stop, and I just though that I was too close to the car (though I definitely didn’t seem to be). Today, I was doing between 30-40 mph on a street with no car or pedestrian in front of me when my car suddenly braked as though I was about to hit something! Thank goodness I didn’t have a car immediately behind me at the time or else I definitely would have been hit. I immediately deactivated the front assist, but this was just scary. Has this happened to anyone else? I scheduled a service appointment for next week, but I would like to learn more before then. Thanks in advance.

Haven't had many false alarms at all on mine, actually not a single one with braking (several with alarm without braking). Agree with getting it double checked at dealer, but maybe decrease the sensitivity of the system in menu options in the meantime

Just googled and found this. What the heck? The descriptions by the drivers here match what has been happening when driving my car. Does anyone know if the front assist system is the same in the ID4 as in these previous models? When Volkswagen’s Front Assist Systems Go Faulty | Knight Law Group

If your car is doing this, it's abnormal and obviously dangerous. Please take it in.

The only time I've had this is approaching a stopped car too aggressively, under regen, which was probably a justified activation.

Definitely take it in. I have gotten a phantom “brake now!” warning a couple times but it was asking me to brake for a ghost it probably detected. I just go right through ghosts. 👻

I had the ID Light (under windshield) lit up red when I get too close to something but I had not had the car actually do the braking for me yet (sometimes I wonder if it will actually work 😁). I don't recall seeing the lit up red for ghosts yet. It may be sensitivity setting like eb2143 said.

Yes this also happens to me. Sometimes with old bad driving habits, I would try to follow a car too close when they are turning into a plaza. I know that the car in front is about to turn and know that I don't need to hit my brakes but the car would warn me of a near collision with the strip light up red and sometime apply the brakes.

The other problem is if you are trying to tailgate someone in front and get over to the next lane, you need to be careful since if you are too close and wanting to get over to the next lane quickly, your car could slam onto the brakes a little more early then you anticipate. Caught me off guard a couple of times

Other times is when I am backing my car into ev stalls at my work place and sometime I pull back too fast with someone else car flap is sticking out and my car is thinking it will hit something and slammed on the brakes.

I've noticed a variation on this theme.

Twice now, I've been approaching an intersection (at maybe 5 MPH). At a certain point, I noticed a reason why I should stop. Once, it was a pedestrian and once it was cross traffic approaching from the left. I braked (and pretty hard). But the car apparently decided this was an emergency and BOOSTED THE HELL out of my brake application, slamming the car to a stop with quite a few mechanical noises from the suspension and such.

There was no need for the car to panic; the brake application that I INTENDED TO MAKE would have been more than sufficient.

And if there had been a vehicle following close behind me, they probably would have rear-ended me.

This behavior of the car stinks and I'll bet there's no way to selectively turn it off (but I'd love to be proven wrong).

I had emergency braking kick in recently on my new 2023 Pro S on an Arizona freeway at 75 mph or so. No cars in front or around me, but it was sunset and I was going under a bridge that cast a long dark shadow into my car’s path that probably triggered it. It only lasted a second but slowed the car down dramatically and then released. The red ID light flashed while it happened. This was in the desert not in a city.

I've not had any frontal emg braking "mishaps" yet knock on wood. However, i've experienced twice now while backing up and into my driveway. both times i realized afterwards that I need to just creep along and not be too quick. don't recall what speed would have triggered the emg braking but i've just tried to remember to go slow-er while backing up into my driveway. TBH i don't have a problem with this working the way it is(while backing up).
