I am not sure how new this information is, so please forgive my ignorance. I just scheduled my 1-year maintenance. As I also - very timely - received an orange 12 V battery warning yesterday, I asked whether they could perform the switch to the stronger battery that many have been talking about at the same time. The electric vehicle expert in the shop hadn't heard anything about a battery switch. The only thing they could offer was to check the battery and replace it with an equally weak original battery if found faulty. I was hoping to avoid multiple appointments...

Also, the EV expert said he only knew about a lengthy software update that takes about 10 hours, but that would not happen until - drumroll - JULY!!! I started laughing and was asked why. I said that VW originally announced the update for September 2021...

Visited dealer for another reason yesterday. Enquired about my battery replacement (was supposed to get replacement battery in March). Was getting some convoluted story about system errors etc. I asked whether it would make sense to replace the battery as the software update to 3.1 would include a new and stronger battery. The rep said that this is true for Europe but may not be the case for the US. I thought the battery update was a prerequisite for updating to 3.1...

I don't think it ever was. Europe, 2.4 is needed as an interim, as the cars with 2.3 (and 2.1) include a module that cannot be updated OTA.

They are also switching the 12V battery as those haven't been up to the task in general either.

Two flies, one stone, etc.

Of course there was also suspicion if the old/existing 12V could handle the update to 3.0 - it takes significant time and comes in two parts, according to VW pages - but was that ever confirmed?

I thought I'd offer one small data point: My car was built Dec 10, 2021. By then the 12v battery problem was firmly established, and my car sat at the port for several months. I had hoped that maybe they had already replaced my 12v battery, in preparation for the coming update. Nope. I pried up the plastic cover and my battery part number does NOT have the "A" at the end of it.

So that means every single MY21 car will need the extended stay at the shop. I had hopes that maybe my stay, whenever it happens, would be a short one, but that was not to be.
