I am considering the 10 year platinum warranty (likely 100K/10yr version)

1) Does anyone know the real cost of this warranty
2) If you received a quote, or purchased one, can you share the cost? (please indicate if it was a different level/ # of years for an apples to apples comparison)
3) Does anyone have any idea or indication of what may be problem areas, and their repair costs, after our 4 yr warranties are up? Pumps, Breaks, etc. Perhaps if you have had warranty work done and your paperwork shows what the repair would have cost without warranty, that could be useful!

Thank you! I am hoping to 1, see if it is worth it to buy, and 2, have an idea of what a good price is to pay. I have called 3 dealerships and their prices have a range of over 1K diffrence between them. Since anyone can sell a warranty it doe snot matter who I purchase from, but calling around the country could be time consuming.

I'd be interested in this as well.

I don't have any data points specific to the ID4 per se, so I'm only going by my experience with the Fiat 500e and early Tesla Model S.

The things that broke down early on in their life mostly revolve around electronics — for me, it was Bluetooth, front audio speakers, and one or more things related to the display. Fortunately, in those vehicles, none of those prevented operating the vehicle safely.

I can't say the same for the ID4 — if either the instrument or Infotainment display screens misbehave, it'd be operating the vehicle almost blind.

Do not have a quote for the ID4. However I did get an 8yr/80K for our 2019 e-Golf. It was about $2700. An out of warranty ECM replacement (with labor) is almost this.

Key thing on this Platinum plan: Make sure to get the plan with a $0 or at maximum $500 disappearing deductible. The initial quotes DON'T have the disappearing deductible. It is a negotiated rate & a money maker at the dealer. While the plan is ultimately a 3rd party insurer, BUT secured/honored by VWoA (better word for it, not coming to me atm: need more coffee).

The dealer I test drove the car at said the battery anyhow was covered to hold at least 70% of stated charge out to the 8 years. The electronics in the battery I believe are also covered under the battery warranty, so probably not much need to worry about it.

Brakes, paint, trim, wipers, etc. of course will also not be covered as those are considered wear items. I only mention that because you mentioned brakes in your original post. The rear drums are supposed to be 'lifetime', but I believe that's a marketing statement and not a warranty one (i.e. the rear brakes aren't listed anywhere as specifically covered in any of the warranty parts, though maybe they are covered in the bumper to bumper?). Someone will have to look at the warranty paperwork supplied with the car to tell us for sure.

So, depending on how long you intended to keep the car, I'm guessing the most expensive parts to fix will be the drivetrain, cooling system, ECU/ECM, and the nav system.

We got offered a similar plan with our Pro/S purchase (we did not get offered a plan with our FE purchase). After asking a lot of questions about what was covered and finally received a doc (that was previously unavailable because the program was ”too new”) showing what WAS covered and what was EXCLUDED, we decided against the warranty as it covered almost nothing that I’d expect to go wrong outside of the bumper-to-bumper and battery warranty of the car. The ”finance guy” was visibly pissed he didn’t get the sale for the warranty, finished our paperwork without saying another word, got up, left the office and drove away. We walked out even happier with our decision. I NEVER consider these warranties normally, but because of all the tech almost fell for it. Glad I didn’t.

Do you have that document to share? I thought it was just exclusionary with no fine print

I think our intentions are pretty long term ... although ID Buzz.... wow could be a game change lol

You mention drivetrain, cooling system, ECU/ECM, and the nav system.

Any idea on how expensive any of these things would be anyone?

My big worry is that the infotainment and or steering wheel screen goes out making the car not really drivable. I'm guessing this would be expensive...

Not really, but here are some MSRP parts prices courtesy of VW:

Electrical components.. 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 (vw.com) - rear motor - inverter $1,800, motor $3500, differential $7000

Electrical components.. 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 (vw.com) - controllers - 2 at about $600 each

Air conditioner & heater. Compressor.. 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 (vw.com) - ac compressor about $800

Instrument panel. Sound system.. 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 (vw.com) - screen around $1,200-$1,500 depending on size and about $1,800 for the 'radio' module itself (which is probably almost all of the MMI, nav system, etc.)

Interestingly the struts and shocks in the suspension are relatively cheap, at only about $165 apiece. A bargain compared to other cars I've owned. LOL Same for brake parts, with even the 'lifetime' rear drums being pretty reasonable it looks like at list price.

I don't see the cooling pump specifically that others are mentioning that they are having early issues with, in some cases, but it might be in a different page or combined in a module or whatever. The parts list doesn't completely look complete online just yet, but also hard to tell.

I bought an extended warranty on a Audi A3 I bought (it was a CPO car and I sold it back after 2 years at the start of the pandemic as it was just sitting in the garage eating up cashflow :), but I threw away the paperwork from it after I got my refund on it, which I did early. It just didn't make sense.

Honestly, I wouldn't buy one up front. You can ALWAYS buy one later if you really think it's a problem, and I think VW will still sell you one as long as your car is still under the manufacturer's warranty period as well. As long as you don't wait until something breaks, since they tend to have a 'cooling off' period.

At the point of sale, no extended warranty is going to pay off until you hit the manufacturer's warranty end anyhow, but my experience is they will still amortize the amount paid over the entire life so if you trade it in early, etc. you'll still not get it all back. They will say you were 'covered' by it from the day you put it in force, even if you couldn't actually use it because it was behind the manufacture's warranty.

Read the fine print for sure. But I think it's a big profit center for most dealers because most people buy them thinking they will need them, then they never own the car long enough to actually use them and end up selling the car early or whatever. Sure they might get SOME of it back, but it's not going to be a lot of it.

I don't know if this article is 'in the clear' or not, as I subscribe to Consumer Reports, but here is their article on warranties: Extended Car Warranties: An Expensive Gamble - Consumer Reports

Nope - left it there. I decided to self-insure.

The quote I received from the VW dealer was for a plan that was 8 years unlimited miles. Started at $4K then he went down to $1.8K then just under $1K - nah….. then he left (as I said). The written material had a lot of old school ICE stuff listed still…I wold have maybe considered a EV-specific warranty. One thing I remember is that it said it covered all the “extra tech” but not the main computer. Yeah, I can see that argument already….”Well, it’s the main computer.” Of course….everything is controlled by the main computer… 😁

That website lists a “VW warranty” but when you go to ‘get a quote’ it lists ALL manufacturers and when you select “VW” it doesn’t list the ID4.
Yeah, I noticed that after playing around with it. LOL I edited my original response to notate the same.

yeah no way would I buy an ex warranty, ESPECIALLY on a car currently covered for the next 4 years! if in the next 4 years people frequently are having high dollar items go bad, perhaps then I would get an ex warranty... but only if I was on a fixed income and in no way could pay $2k for such catastrophic failure of a part. Ex warranties are nearly on scam level - unless you're on a fixed income or tight budget.

last week when I am taking the 2022 ID4, as usual my sale agent dropped me in finance office :p
I gave my credit uinion check and sale agent already sent me purchase order for my loan process... I thought I would be in and out from that room in 5 min...
finance guy took couple of brochers out
1. premium warranties and started explaining ... After 2 min i said, I am not interested.. he didn't stopped.. and he stopped after 10 min.. i said I am not interested
2. he took protection packages brochure... with in 30 seconds i said, I am not interested... he stopped after 5 min.. again i said I am not interested
3. He took a paper and asked me to sign it I am declining the above packages.. at that point i got literally irritated.. i asked why this is some requirements and asking that I am declining and how my vehicle purchase is tied to these packages .. again he started explaining.. i signed with some junk characters :p

so 5 min becomes 30 min (after I declining he started entering the numbers in his computer and printed such a long paper (almost 2 feet ! and i never saw that long paper in my life time)
moral story is.. we know for a long time... car dealers are suckers (there could be some good dealers)

btw..
platinum warranty costs $3200
Protection costs (varies paint, seats etc..) .. $1600

Do not buy any of those things from the dealer as you buy your car. They are all scams. Buy your car, plus state registration and taxes, that's all. No extended warranty. No service contract. No fabric protection. No lifetime oil changes. No paint protection. No data etching. All worthless. The price of your car includes a multi-year warranty from Volkswagen. That's all you need. Your finance guy is a crook who takes you for a sucker.
