Did anyone else get the impression that he was surprised he liked the ID.4?
Yes. I've not watched one of his videos before, but it seems he did little homework prior to making the video. Maybe it's his thing to have more of a "first impression" view. Manually opening the liftgate was pretty silly.

He was definitely looking for something wrong and couldn’t find anything. That’s good. You need someone with that perspective to see how the car really is 😎

My impression of Sandy is that praise is hard earned. He holds back from coming to a general conclusion on the car because he has so many boxes to tick. It took a long time for him to appreciate Tesla, after they addressed some of his engineering complaints. His video where he talks about the BMW i3 breakdown is very interesting.

Having Sandy say that there is “no doubt this is a high quality build” is the equivalent of winning a gold medal at the olympics or maybe getting to the summit of Mount Everest 😁

He seemed like a klutz. I am surprised since he has a great automotive reputation.

Recently he has become somewhat of a Tesla fanboy, so I had sort of stopped paying attention to him.

He seemed surprised that the fit and finish was good, and perhaps that's because he became accustomed to the mediocre fit and finish in Tesla.
I think thats mostly because he seems to get a lot of attention from tesla fanboys. They look to him for external validation and he gives them that.

He is getting older and it was obvious he did no research on the vehicle whatsoever prior to his review session.
Lol. Let me make an unnecessary ageist comment then explain that "First Impressions" was a apt title for the video.

considering the number of vehicles he has assessed over his career I would not expect him to be surprised that a VAG car has excellent tolerances. I know why you would be left with this impression though! Maybe he doesn’t have much experience with foreign car companies but I have never heard of modern fords having problems.

He made it look like it was a paddle shift
He was treating it like one intentionally. He commented that it reminded him of a paddle shifter. I don't exactly hit it like that but I do slap it relatively quickly but the last few VW's of mine have had paddle shifters :)

I do agree with your opinion on this. I think the "surprise" was more about his personal opinion that he doesn't like VW's as a car that much but was genuinely impressed by it. It's also true that every car manufacturer is having to dig deep to hit these price points so all of them are compromising somewhere or another. VW has done a really good job on the how and where on this iteration. I mean, this is like barely $10K more than an eGolf!
