I got a note from Verizon that I’ve consumed half of my 1024 MB data allotmen. As I’ve connected zero devices to the Verizon hot spot, what has been consuming data?

Don't know, but a few have reported being cut off after 2 weeks. I wonder if there was a goof and VZW is counting all ID4 telematics against the hot spot credit? We used it a couple times for the kids to jump on a zoom for a short time, but not enough to eat up our free allotment.

Is that if you add the car to an existing account, or if you need to open an entirely new account?
I am not certain but think it is the rate for anyone regardless of your current cell provider. Our last car had AT&T Wireless as the data provider (also $20 a month for unlimited data). We are not AT&T Wireless customers and only were for that car.

Not sure if there is a special deal through carnet. But based on VZ site it looks like $20 is for existing accounts. Unlimited Plan for your Connected Car ❘ Verizon

Fine print: $20 Per line per month with an existing smartphone on an Unlimited plan. Plus taxes & fees. Device alone: first line on the account is $75 with paper-free billing and Auto Pay, $80 without. Auto Pay and paper-free billing required to get the discount. All subsequent lines are $20.

Edit: Does appear through carnet is just $20 without any line fees.

I am not a Verizon customer, but found this on the FAQ page for pre-paid connected car wifi: Prepaid Connected Car Wi-Fi FAQs
It indicates, unless I am reading it wrong, that it is unlimited data for $20/month, without having to be an existing Verizon customer. I am considering this option so my kids can use their iPads in the car when traveling. If I am incorrect in my assumption, please let me know.

I just partially went through the process and it looks like non Verizon subscribers are billed through carnet rather than VZ. $20 plus applicable taxes, doesn't appear anything else is required.

Are you using wireless android auto or wireless apple carplay? Both will connect through the car's wifi and (at least with AA) will use the car's data if available.

Thanks, that makes sense. I’m using CarPlay, I’d assumed that CarPlay would use the phone’s cellular rather than the car’s.

What? No. The wifi connection the phone establishes with the car is for phone to car data flow. This is different from activating the ID.4's hotspot. The phone shouldn't be pulling data thru the car under this scenario.

That's what makes sense but as we should know by now things are often non-sensical. After losing my hotspot within two weeks without connecting anything to it, the info I found was the same as you responded to stating the devices will prioritize their hotspot data rather than device data if it's available when using CarPlay or AA. I don't know why it's set up that way but it apparently burned through my free data within a week.

Yeah but even an owner on the Facebook group who says he didn't connect anything got the Verizon "times up" email after 2 weeks.

In any case, users on reddit who have wanted to pull data for their wireless AA from the car's hotspot haven't been able to do so.

Being android it is always highly dependent on the model of phone and version of android that's running. In cases where the phone establishes a wifi-direct connection, the car's hotspot data will not come into play. However, if it is not using wifi-direct, it is joining the hotspot network and talking with the car that way.

I've seen it first hand, AA automatically connects my phone to the car's wifi. Before my hotspot ran out, spotify streaming via AA did not cause my data usage to increase. Additionally, there are a number of help articles on enabling automatic use of mobile data under the wifi advanced settings to be able to get an internet connection.

I don't have an iPhone to test first hand, but google shows a number of discussions on apple support and various car forums of people running into no internet when the use wireless carplay and a car without a data plan.

So all in all there is no one answer, it depends....

I experimented with turning off the in car WiFi hot spot, which threw a warning that CarPlay would be interrupted. So that's where my data has been going.

I did not explicitly connect my phone to the hot spot.

Yes, Apple CarPlay is via your cellphone's connection and thereby plan. Although if you place the phone on the charging pad (capable phone) it will use the vehicle's antenna to improve range.

Not in my experience. I tested this by disabling mobile data on the iPhone while we were listening to a Spotify song and it didn't skip a beat. Navigation worked fine too. For some reason it seems like Carplay is using the car's data.

Interesting. It may depend on usage as I just had to verify my iPhone-BT connection to play one of my audio playlists. I guess it comes down to the App's themselves?
CarPlay itself resides within the vehicle computer and then looks to the iPhone for its affiliations. From there some/many may be picked up by the integral CarPlay?
The integral Nav is per the vehicle's system. However I know the ChargePoint App mapping is via cellphone for the same BT verification reason. 🤷‍♂️

Overall, iOS assumes that wifi is free or a fixed rate and prefers wifi whenever available. I would just forget that network until you actually need it. That’s what we have done in our Audi’s.

This is very confusing. What I really want to know is what will stop working when Verizon‘s 30 day trial ends? What functions that I had on delivery will stop working? When we know that we can decide if $20 a month is worth it or necessary for using the features. Personally, I have unlimited on my iPhone with T-Mobile and would rather not start another cell account With Verizon.
