I’ve been trying to get my Verizon hotspot service shut off, and in checking with my bank they did not withdraw the fee this month. The dash icon looks the same (I think), so how will I know that the hotspot has been shut off? I did notice that my phone didn’t join the car LAN yesterday, I didn’t explore that because I don’t want the phone to join it.

Does the dash icon change when the hotspot is inactive?

In my case the Verizon trial WiFi lasted 2 weeks. It just stops working. Mine was used up by streaming audio on Apple CarPlay. In my case my phone's 5G service took over so, don't really need the Verizon service.

At the same time you will get an email stating that the Verizon data trial is over. You then have the option of buying a monthly $20.00 subscription via Car-Net. If you already have Verizon for your phone service, you can add the car data plan to your existing service. There are separate choices in Car-Net for each to place in the Car-Net shopping cart.

Did you add a data plan with VZN or is this the trial that expired? I'm assuming the former since you said you check your statement.

You can also check if you try to connect a tablet or laptop to your car as a hotspot. If it says connected but no internet then there should be no data plan associated.

For the records, a common misconception from customers is that some thinks that once data hotspot is gone, they would not be able to connect and use Android Auto or Apple Carplay. They are separate and independent from each other. As long as your phone have data and you have WiFi and Bluetooth turn on, you are good.

My VZ hotspot ceased exactly at 30 days from delivery, as I had not re-upped the service. The Car-Net computer actually shut off everything and I had to call them to get the basic Car-Net services [limited as they are] reactivated.

With all the hype about Verizon having the best network in the U.S., I was not impressed with the Verizon 4G coverage that I saw as compared to the 5G coverage on my iPhone 12 from T-Mobile. T-Mobile's signal shown via Apple Car Play was most of the time stronger than the 4G signal shown on the ID.4's infotainment screen. Not worth the $20.00 dollars a month.

Bars don’t equal coverage. 1 bar on Verizon could mean it’s on a higher frequency band (faster, less overall coverage) at that moment in time. If you drive further away from the cell site, it will shift to a different, lower LTE band (700Mhz) that will show more “bars” but not have as much capacity. In either case, you have a completely usable cell signal, and a band switch will change the strength displayed on the screen.

If you were able to speedtest the two, it’s possible to get 1 bar 50Mbps on one carrier, and 4 bars 5Mbps on the other. There’s just too many factors to be able to judge a network by signal bars.

T-mobile is great, but Verizon will always edge them out for deep rural coverage at this time.

T-Mobile 5G in my area is low band 5G which means it's only slightly faster than 4G at its best. The fact the VW is providing a 4G interface only indicates that it not going to be faster Verizon 5G high band service. Download SpeedTest on T-Mobile 5G on my iPhone 12 is just south of 200Mbps download compared to Verizon 4G download on my iPhone 12 connected to Verizon through the car at best was 25Mbps download. I think they purposely cap the download speeds on auto data plans even though they are advertised as fast data.

Do note in my testing the modem they have on the car for Verizon service is not the best compared to the phone. There's many times my Verizon phone has much stronger service then the car. So I definitely am fairly confident in saying what you described isn't a Verizon issue just wherever the put the antenna or type of antenna isn't nearly as good

The 4G icon on the dash has nothing to do with hotspot functionality. The car always maintains 4G connectivity for updates and the Car-Net app.
This is the part I can't wrap my head around. If these cars maintain an LTE connection to VZW even after the grace period for updates, who is paying for this? Did VW strike a deal with VZW just for OTAs?

We get 5 years of Car-Net [very basic] service in the USA. This as we know accommodates the OTA software updates in addition to the basic services. We pay for this as a function of buying/leasing the vehicle and post the 5 year period will need to pay for it directly.

Yea as mentioned before in the post above it's factored into the car price. I'm sure VW pays for it for the 5 years in a deal they made with Verizon then we will have to pay something.

Different system - SatCom via the "shark fin" antenna
It is typically "free" for the life of the vehicle as far as I know (again a function of paying for the vehicle itself).

btw: My prior Audi had a Google Earth cellular overlay atop the SatCom data which was very nice. But at the end of 2020 VW AG and Google parted ways. Here's hoping it returns.
How does the onboard navigation get data? I assume that too is independent of a hotspot plan.
