I can't believe they are focused on fantasizing about additional revenue streams by monetizing OTA updates in their PR blurbs when they haven't even delivered on making basic functions work that were allegedly delivered with the car.

Maybe, if I wait another 12 weeks.

It says "all" but it doesn't specify which region. It also says this update is being pushed out immediately. The release mentions the ID.3 and GTX so I can only assume this update doesn't apply to US models.

Currently people registered with WeConnectID get an email asking for permission to push the update.
Then the actual update will be rolled out in waves starting two weeks from now.
USA and carnet is not mentioned yet anywhere.
am assuming that will follow later

They need to listen to their own PR much better and get the OTA in the US very soon: “Vehicles that always have the latest software on board can provide an excellent digital customer experience and are therefore of the utmost importance for our future success,” adds Ulbrich

Instead of "new revenue stream" nonsense fix the damn car. I am running out of patience with VW regarding the car software. At this point I do not recommend the car to anyone unless they fix the software first.
Exactly this... why would I buy any software upgrades from VW when they can't even get the included software working correctly?...

I believe that this first OTA update was promised for delivery during the summer of 2021, at least for US owners. The autumn equinox will be next Wednesday September 22, 9 days from now. VW will have failed to deliver on this commitment if our cars are not updated by then.

You know, that particular paragraph begins with "In (the) future..." I agree, it's maybe tone deaf given there's plenty of foundational work that needs to get done, but doing one does not cancel the other. The theme of this whole news release is the software updates are coming, which is clearly a good thing. I don't know why that one aside they threw in is so disturbing.

What is wrong with it - as someone who almost bought one yesterday until the dealer decided to add a bunch of crap like etching and permaplate - I would like to know.

Thank you!

Where was this promise made? As far as I know, VWoA hasn't officially promised anything publicly and replies from Customer Care have only had generalities like "in about a year" or (at best) "later this year."

VW announced the summer 2021 OTA update in a press release in March, and they provided follow-up info to several car / EV media outlets. One story is here: Volkswagen's First Over-The-Air Software Update Is Coming Soon

There are definitely some bugs with the software. For example these are some things that I have noticed:

  • The auto hold feature is disabled (selection is grayed out). This is my biggest issue with the software
  • Scheduled charging does not work properly (another big miss). It is ridiculous that this feature is not working on an EV.
  • The anti roll feature does not work consistently
  • Folding mirrors do not work consistently
  • The car net app does not have many simple features that even 5 year old ICE VWs have
  • When you select sport mode and turn the car off, the selection remains in sport mode but the car is actually in comfort mode.
  • I heard Android auto connection drops, I use CarPlay, so I am not sure how bad it is.

No. It says that European cars need to be taken in to VW workshops to get the 2.1 update before they can bet the OTA update. The early US cars had the 2.1 update installed at their ports of entry, so that did not apply to them.
I quote:

The company said that the updates are currently being successfully tested on over 3,000 company cars and that the customers in Europe will be able to update the software before the end of summer 2021.
