I 100% buy it -- not just because they have less space to deal with, but they are designing these to be manufactured at a breakneck speed of assembly, with enormous supply chain logistics that they can't afford to get wrong. They need to be economical in terms of materials and build time, and hopefully easily serviceable (or reliable to the point of not needing service -- can't say that about any supercar).

Sounds like an old aphorism I've heard that basically goes: Building a good expensive car is easy, building a good cheap car is hard. I think that's partly why people appreciate cars like the BMC Mini, VW GTI, etc. They're a marvel of packaging and performance.

Yeah, I think that's what he was really trying to say - It's easier to design anything when you don't have a tight budget to stick to. Case in point, the Segway i2. The anticipated selling price was $2K, but Dean Kamen turned a crew of very talented engineers loose (without any bean counters lording over them) and they came up with a fabulous machine that they had to sell for $6K and very few people could afford to buy one
