VW ID.4 Order Process

So I have an RSVP for a car (PRO-S with Gradient) and wonder how long folks are finding between the steps on the process. Yes, it's been only a day, but geez.... how hard is it to move from RSVP to ORDER then LOCKED, etc... and on to getting a car? I'm surprised the Spreadsheet kept on this site for orders isn't tracking the steps along the way in terms of elapsed time. Might be useful in a world of instant gratification ("If it's on my phone, it must be here, now and real") in terms of real world experience and establishing expectations. Thoughts?

Lots of examples of timing in this 1100 post thread:
ID4 Obsession resulted in understanding shipping logistics
It appears to depend on color and options you order but is moving much faster (around 1 month) now except for AWD.

There are a lot of factors that can determine how long the process takes, but now that the FE's are mostly (if not all) delivered, the Pro's (S included) are getting quicker through the process. Just remember that this type of transparency and ordering process is new to VW, so don't expect an Amazon shopping level of insight and updates. Just check your portal every now and then to see if it has progressed, and keep in contact with your dealer's EV specialist for any information you might be curious to know.

It took mine 5 months from order to the time I received it. A lot depends on production time. Production took about 3 months, shipping stage was a little over 4 weeks from Germany to the US. On boat time is about 15 days. The other 15 days is sitting at port waiting to be shipped and sitting at port waiting to clear customs. Delivery to the dealer is dependent on where you live. We are southwest and it took 12 days to get from Houston port to us. Be patient and watching what we call the wheel of pain waiting for it to move is difficult 😂

Wow. So when did you order your car? From what I can see, the first deliveries to dealers didn't start until Marcy 17th or so. Thus a good part of the elapsed time sounds longer BECAUSE it was pre-release. Car has only been available 45 days or less, so I'm hoping the time from RESERVED to DELIVERED will have shortened. Who knows. But an August delivery might be realistic.

The more it extends, the more an Audi Q4 E-Tron might obscure my moment of clarity. 😊
I was concerned with that myself. But thankfully avoided the siren's call [Loreley on the Rhine in this non-Homeric case]. ;)

Initial FE orders were 23 Sept 20 with, yes, US deliveries not until circa 17 March 21. But a number of delaying factors. VW suddenly had to sell more units in Germany to boost their carbon footprint fleet average denominator. Then we awaited firmware updates and likely Customs delays in US port as well. And also VWoA wanting them to hit dealerships nationwide near-simultaneously. I've had to clean much "hidden" dust from long port-sitting (hidden to dealer prep, but alas not me).

Current Pro/Pro S orders seem to be progressing thru the ordering/delivery system much more quickly. (y)

Yeah... that's what my gut tells me: Initial delays were ...er... initial delays and the rest should proceed more uniformly without stage management. Understand the management desire... I mean explaining to folks in New York why the folks in Little Rock got theirs first can get a bad reaction. But glad that's behind us now.
4/6 ordered
4/15 locked
4/27 production complete
4/29 arrived in USA (most likely I got someone's cancellation because the VIN number is 23xxx and I already see VIN number 25xxx at dealerships

Now waiting for those lazy butts to just ship it to my dealership 😐. Neither Dealership now VW customer care gives me any details besides "we'll let you know when it arrives at your dealership"

Damn it I want my ID4 😣
Step 1 4/25
Step 2 5/5
Step 3 immediately after receiving email about Step 2.

Estimated Pickup says Aug 2021
Pro S Blue, Grey

Stopped at the dealer and they had 4 on the lot. One blue 1st as their demo. Two Pro S Gradient one white, one black, both with black int. One black Pro also with black int. Apparently the white Pro S/G and the black Pro are going to be available due to cancellation but the white has an interested party already. The black Pro S/G might become available, sounds like another person backing out. Findlay in Henderson, NV in case someone wants to try and grab one. Didn't sound like they were going to add a markup.

How are you getting your VIN#? On my owner portal is says arrived in US and enroute, with a July estimated pick up date, but no VIN listed anywhere

"In Chrome go to the three dot menu dropdown... MORE TOOLS > DEVELOPER TOOLS
Once in developer mode go to the NETWORK tab, check "Preserve Log" and hit the reload button.
After its done reloading type "api" in the search box.
About the "graphql" down should be one that reads "authenticatedGetReservations" in the preview.
Open up all those file trees until the last one and you'll see your VIN about 4 lines from the bottom"

I put down my initial reservation on 4/23, got the "you can order now" email yesterday, 5/5. An order for a moonstone gray ID.4 Pro placed, and expected in August here in Austin.

Thanks, got it but no information like the VIN. So I assume it has no gone into production yet.

I have no idea when the VIN gets assigned. Mine didn't have the VIN number on the browser even when VW website showed that it's in the USA (I forget what step that was maybe 5). VIN got assigned after inspection at the port I think, but probably it's different for everyone. Pretty sure they just reassigned a cancelled order to me
That's curious they waited so long. Your name is essentially attached to the order, and the VIN is assigned (internally) when production is scheduled. Maybe, since there are so few option combinations, they decided to withhold the VIN from the owner to maintain the greatest amount of logistics flexibility. VW's inventory control sounded chaotic in those early weeks after launch.

My VIN was available on the web site shortly after production was complete and it was released for transatlantic shipping. However, the process to dig through the developer menus to find the VIN is not an easy piece of work. You have to click quite a bit to open enough of the sub-levels to get to where it is displayed.
