Okay, went for a drive tonight and it seems pretty cool! Watching the lights fade in and out from side to side was pretty cool and it totally masked around in oncoming car without losing the highbeams! One stupid question though - do I still need to push the stalk to enable the auto high beams when I want them? They don’t come on automatically every time the lights are on?

Thanks for the report @Jupiter! I just tried and the auto High beam turns off with ignition cycle. :(

How did you found it the "decisiveness" in the city? I find there is a lot of random and short activations, likely primarily to street lamps...

I found the same thing... It seemed flicker on and off for very short periods as we went between street lights, especially on streets that were not totally straight. So maybe it’s good that you still have to turn it on manually? I know on my Polestar 2 (which is based on Volvo coding), there’s a setting where it will remember the activation and stay on all the time until you turn it off manually. Maybe there’s a similar setting somewhere in the Volkswagen code?

Interesting, with my europrice activation it now defaults to on every time i start the car, I think I came across a setting once related to this, I'll try to remember.

I also get a lot of rapid on-off in urban-suburban area with streetlights, to the point I've had friends comment. If I could have it wait longer to turn of after a street light I probably would.

Maybe @JohnnyForElectric or @waldo22 would like to grab the settings from your car and see what’s different!

Related to this, I HAVE matrix lights enabled on my 25 ID.Buzz FE via paid update and, if helpful, would be willing to share my settings, etc. Someone would just need to tell me what needs to be done. I have OBDEleven v2 and v3, but there doesn’t;t seem to be much in there (maybe?). That being said, I’d be willing to work with someone if it made sense at any time.

Thanks @wtatun! Do you also see the random activations in the city? Does your "Auto high beam" stay on after ignition cycle?

Buzz is little tricky - needs SFD2, thanks for offering your help. We're renting a Buzz in few weeks, so hope to have Buzz related answers soon. We can see if a remote session would be viable...

We can do that, but unfortunately even module 19 does not want to give off the interesting settings without SFD unlock - let me noodle on the Euro settings. There is a ton in Gateway 19, especially around BAP that could be related... I should get deeper into BAP anyways, this potentially can also solve the real steering wheel backlight...

From GTP5- about "BAP"

It’s part of the Volkswagen Group’s internal communication architecture for Body Control / Comfort systems.
Here’s the key context for your lighting-related entries:

🔹 What BAP Does
  • Purpose: Provides a standardized way for human–machine interface modules (like the infotainment display, virtual cockpit, or control units with menus) to exchange configuration/status data with functional control units — without each system having to know the other’s low-level CAN/LIN details.
  • Scope: Used primarily for non-safety-critical comfort features — lighting settings, climate control menus, driver assistance menus, wipers, mirrors, etc.
  • Medium: It runs on top of CAN or FlexRay, with the “gateway” (Module 19 in your case) handling the mapping.

I do not see random activations, or have not noticed. It appears to be working as it should and expected. Yes, my “Auto High Beam” indicator does stay on after the ignition cycle, therefore always on, as long as my light stalk is forward for High Beams.

Here is your answer for "permanent" High beam assist :)

Module 19
SFT00032-MAS28896-High beam assistant-Resetting high-beam control Light Assist -> Not active

Thanks! Not sure I want to pay another $10 unlock to make that mod, but I will write it down on my list. If you come up with a way to adjust the sensitivity in the city so it doesn’t feel like it flicks on and off so quickly, maybe I’ll do both of those… really appreciate all of your hard work on this!

I hear you in the random activation. Played quite a bit with that feature in Europe and it feels like it's speed and GPS/map data dependent. You are almost able to control your high beams with accelerator (it turns of by slowing down to ~30kmph (19mph) and turns on when accelerating ~45kmph (28 mph) ... There is universal city speed limit 50 kmph (31mph) in most European countries so these speed make sense.

I sadly don't have adaptation from the ID.7 nor the Skoda Elroq as those were the new SFD2 Euro vehicles and our US licensed ODIS did not work with them. Yes I was able to trick ODIS that the ID.3 is US ID.4 but we know how that ended-up. Well the dealership had to connect their Euro ODIS to make the car communicate with the VW Car Net in Europe again... But we have matrix :)

Thanks. In my case, it seemed to dim every time it saw a streetlight. When I drove through the woods, even at lower speeds, they stayed bright. That’s where I need it anyway! Given that it seems so responsive to streetlights I guess it’s good that it’s not on all the time…

After months of tinkering, testing, and community collaboration, we’ve figured out how to activate the matrix functionality on our ID.4s! 💡

Huge thanks to @waldo22 and @Andy at Ross-Tech.com — for all the tinkering and contributions!

The secret sauce comes from this adorable green ID.3 donor, maybe I'll share later how I messed it up with US version of ODIS... 💚🙏🏼

As @waldo22 put it "it's shockingly simple". We all were 2/3 there, but were missing the C002 adaptation. We believe that is a high performance section of ICAS1 that is responsible for calculating the matrix. The C002 module needs to be SFD unlocked to show adaptation values and I think that was one of the reasons it was hiding so well. I call it SFD 1.5, even if that is not a thing.

⚠ This is not VW-approved and may not meet U.S. certification — proceed at your own risk and check your local regulations.

'' City lights swivel the headlight eyeball outward for wider illumination, their range is lowered and cornering LEDs run at lower of intensity in city area and city speeds.
