What are the chances we'll get Apple CarKey support?

One of only a few things I'll miss from my Tesla is the phone-as-key feature. I love not having to carry keys with me, but I'll have to get used to having the ID.4 fob now.

I'm curious if the door-handles and interior have the requisite sensors on the ID.4, and maybe it's just not activated yet. Wireless CarPlay is a huge win - I hope they go all the way and enable CarKey as well, if not on this model, then future ones.

I don't believe the door handle has the NFC capabilities (someone here will correct me if I'm wrong I'm sure haha). I think there's a better chance of seeing Samsungs version which uses UWB tech (essentially a signal like the key) but even that is up in the air I give it a slight likelihood seeing how Samsung Is partnered with Audi on this feature

The other car company implement this using bluetooth.

The Car Connectivity Consortium finalized its Digital Key Release 3.0 specification in July 2021 - that supports UWB. VW, Apple, Samsung, and VW are all on the Board of Directors of that consortium so it definitely seems likely that there would be support at some point but the real question is whether the 2021 ID.4 will support it.

I have seen someone reply on the Facebook group that only ID.4s built after week 51 2021 will have the hardware support.

I was/am really looking forward to this - in the summer my wife and I regularly drive to a public state park to swim. Right now we hide our phone and key fob in our towel. It would be nice if we could just have our phone since it requires biometrics to unlock the car (bonus points would be if I could just use my Apple Watch).

Wishful thinking that they will allow retrofit if additional hardware needed.

My 2021 AWD Pro S has arrived at my dealer and I should be able to pick it up in the next few days.

I going into this with the assumption that the 2021s will not be able to do this and have been considering workarounds for our swims. I love either the UWB Digital Key 3 or the Tesla bluetooth app approach but I'm not going to get my hopes up.

Are there boxes one could use to store the key fob while still locking the doors? Then I could carry the manual key or even use CarNet (if it ever gets reliable and that functionality).
KESSY already includes UWB hardware, unless there some other components needed this may only require a software update.

Samsung and BMW already using UWB ....phone as key
Need Samsung S21 for this to work. My Note 9 doesn't seem to have this capability.

Does it just use UWB or does it depend on NFC to set up the connection? Would their approach work on a car that only has UWB?

NFC is short proximity and it was nixed for many reasons because it gives vehicle makers more freedom and security with UWB....how it is going to be implemented is still up to the software and security department to figure out everything . One thing for sure we don't want easy way for hackers to take full possession of vehicle.
