I've never owned a car with such fancy headlights before. Everytime I start the car at night I'm fascinated by the obvious sweeping movement of the headlight beams out in front of the car. What exactly is taking place with them? Being inside I can't see what's happening, but the apparent motion gives me the impression the car is "blinking"...like it's closing and reopening its "eyes". I'm sure there's a reason for this?

Upon each startup the headlights auto-level vertical. This is to account for/match cargo loading, e.g. a heavily loaded aft will require headlight adjustment down a bit.

Wow. Nice. I guess that accounts for why I don't get people flashing at me all the time now. My Kona Elec. clearly did not have such a feature as oncoming cars would frequently flash me. I guess the bonus effect is it probably looks very cool to anyone observing an ID4 as it preps to journey on into the night.

The LED matrix headlights are steerable - like an eyeball. The light tracks the steering to provide for maximum visibility in low-light scenarios. As far as the startup animation goes - that's a bit of fun the engineers put in to give the car character. Kind-of like your car waking up...

Too bad we don't get the Matrix lights in the US.

I think you're right but we still get LED projector headlights with auto-leveling, steering etc. We're just missing some of the dynamic matrix functionality in the Europe-spec version. I was thinking we did (same hardware) - it's just that they are currently software downgraded to comply with US regulations. However, it appears the US has a variant of the matrix headlights which is likely missing the Europe-spec matrix functionality. Bummer. In theory I bet we could install the Europe spec headlights however - maybe that could be a consideration if/when US regulations get updated.
