White line on navigation map?

7009 Views 35 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  CiTY HuNTeR
Most of the time a waving white line goes across the map on the screen. Sometimes it changes location. Does anyone know what this line symbolises? Sometimes I mistake it as a road.

Take picture and highlight or make mark on the picture so we can see what you experience.
It's quite possible thqat the line is the edge of your vehicle's driving range. It is an option on the Nav screen. If you Zoom out it may start looking more like a circle.

Here's a pic. The line is not static. As i drive it changes location on the map. it's not always there. But today i saw it multiple times during around 100km driving.

And here driving a little closer but same city you can see the shape is changed.

That looks like it's simply the way the mapping software tiles the image and for whatever reason, it doesn't always match up. That would hold true especially if it looks normal sometimes. It would be nice to know which mapping software VW is using on their onboard maps.

I haven't used the VW maps yet because I prefer to use Apple Maps.

Depending at zoom level there will be lines like that that with little different colors inside representing City/County or if you travel across Indian regions in US.....
What you see is dependent on zoom level here is example of other similar app with this information and what is grayed out are City/County borders example Memphis.

You can while seating still play with zoom level and once you start zooming out it will start showing you this if you are near some City or in US it will show you Indian regions and protected lands for recreation in green and or little different colors for Indian regions.
This is great feature if you travel across country roads and small villages to remind you to slow down if you usually driving over speed limits....because at this grayed City/County borders it is more likely local police 🚔 will be seating for catching fast drivers.

It can't be that. The line move once in a while while driving and also no logic to them either if it was supposed to be city limits etc. It's really annoying to look at while driving. Especially when countryside where i sometime mistake the white line around the grey areas as a road.

While you using navigation...depending on speed and other factors....your zoom is in auto mode and to get the point what I'm saying... while seating go to this specific location where this occurs and start playing with zoom in zoom out....you will understand....
Or post various zoom levels while moving map by hand and going over this location without being there actually or driving over.
It is the predicted range. Zoom out a good way and you can see that it looks like a blob that gives you a rough idea how far you can go on the charge. For some reason it wants to draw funny limits in closer zoom levels. I think it is trying to map the limits using roads and gets confused.

Sorry but it cant be that either. Mostly the line is just a few km/miles away even though I have full charge.

And zooming right out. The white line hasn’t the top is 1000km+ away. I’m really puzzled

I was pleasantly surprised to see it do the same thing in the US for Lewes, DE to Cape May, NJ.

Can’t be that either. No ferry to get there exist. And so many areas if I zoom I could easily reach is outside the area. It is really annoying….

I live in Rehoboth, and I see this all the time, especially East of Rt 1. My own best guess is that it represents areas that it thinks are of limited accessibility.
Could that be a line similar to what some smart phones have? I mean, can you slide down with your finger to expose a menu or dual screen?

No, not at all. There is just this large dark area - I suspect the navi does a quick check to see how long it would take to reach various spots, and it ignores secondary roads and subdivisions.

Here is a current view. East of Rt 1, it is dark, except for the road to the ferry. It is similar on the NJ side - a narrow strip of light color until you get a bit further north.
