Windshield Washer Fluid Cap Breaking

2077 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  7S POWER
I went to top off the washer fluid the other day since I had used a bit on a road trip. This common part (5G0 955 455, looks like it is used on other VWs and Audis) seems to be total junk if it is breaking already. I haven't opened it more than once or twice. Has anyone seen this on their ID.4, or previous VWs they have owned?

Should I ask them to replace this at the dealer when I bring the car in to address the seatbelt recalls? It feels silly asking them to replace such a small part, but there's really no excuse for it being broken having only owned the car 4 months.

Don't feel silly. It's clearly an in-warranty item and should have far better resilience. Only by reporting such items does VW reevaluate their spec's and vendors for such parts.
Fortunately everything is tracked per VIN and if enough have the same issue it's easy for them to ascertain which lot the part came from at the factory.

Definitely, have it replaced. Just like everything else, it will probably be back ordered!

Wow, this must be a record at breaking WWF cap in 4 months of ownership. Try not to yank it but place your fingers on top of the cap and pull it gently with your thumb on the rectangular tab.

It is same thing happening on BMW....and after they did revision update on different types of plastics it was fixed.
I guess VW needs to make revision on different type of plastic cap.

I was just discussing with a friend that the 40+ year old original blade that came on my Sven folding camp saw was so much thicker and better quality than a replacement I bought a couple years ago. The new one is so flexible it actually makes cutting more difficult.
Alas most every manufacturer falls victim to the bean counter's "value engineering" and you know where lower quality outsourcing at some point. A few cents a part doesn't seem like much but given a large fleet multiplier and in aggregate across the vehicle it does make a profit margin difference, so ... 😔

At least you can still use it until VW replaces it. And if it is used across the VW line it may be in stock! 😉

This is new to me. I've owned several VAG cars, and honestly, I never broke one WWFC. For what it's worth, I would pick up a used one from the used auto parts. It shouldn't cost more than $5.00.
