Wireless CarPlay issue

5041 Views 11 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  jgoodnough
I’m not pulling any data in while connected to CarPlay. Maps are blank, can’t connect to Apple Music, can’t pull in EA or PlugShare maps. Restarting car and rebooting center stack no help. If I turn off WiFi on my iPhone, then Maps, etc all work on my phone.

It’s as if it’s not using the phone for cellular service. I formerly had the Verizon hotspot, but no longer.

Thoughts?

EDIT: this is wireless CarPlay.

Make sure you have WIFI Assist enabled, Wireless CarPlay connects your phone the Car WIFI which I don't believe give you internet access.

Thanks, I’ll check that.

I was able to semi-resolve by switching to wired CarPlay and turning off the phone’s WiFi.
WiFi assist is on.
 Are you able to access the internet on your phone while connected to Wireless CarPlay? I don't recall having to change anything else on my device to use this, although it's not an an ID.4 it should work the same.

Edit: Would suggest rebooting your phone, I seen instance where this resolved WIFI CarPlay issues.

Have you tried telling the phone to forget the car wifi network? You’ll have to basically reauthorize wireless CarPlay after that, but it does sound like the phone is maybe still trying to use the Verizon data, which is no longer available.

I went through the exact same thing yesterday. I didn't want the Verizon hotspot to begin with and it comes as no surprise that their implementation of the hotspot leaves the system non-functional when they disconnect you. I also had to delete the wifi connection and reauthorize before it would work.
With Apple CarPlay, at the upper left hand corner of the CarPlay screen you will see your phone's WiFi and cell service signal strength icons. If only the 4/5G icon is shown, CarPlay will function because it is connected to your phone's cell service data plan. If the WiFi icon is present, it means the phone is connected to the ID.4's hot spot which is now non functional because the Verizon data plan was terminated.

If the WiFi icon returns, you'll need to go to WiFi settings, choose the ID.4 hotspot and choose the "forget this network" setting. When selecting "App Connect" on the Infotainment screen, "Use Apple CarPlay" will show up, select "Ok" and the same WiFi network connection will be re-established between the phone and the car with only allowing the phone's Cell Service 4/5G signal to provide the data. Again, in the upper left hand corner of the CarPlay display, only the 4/5G icon should be shown. All will work well.

Unfortunately it appears that the car's WiFi hot-spot occasionally try's to re-activate it self without the Verizon data connection. When this occurs, you need to go back, choose the ID.4 hot-spot network name, and choose forget network again, repeat the entire process again. Hopefully this doesn't happen very often.

Alternately, if your phone functions as a hot-spot, you can choose your phone's hot-spot name as a WiFi network in the Infotainment>Setting>Wifi. Put in your phone's hot-spot password and the infotainment system will be connected to your phone's hot-spot allowing connection of data for Car-Play and access in Internet Radio if you chose to pay $8.00 for the annual service. Other occupants in your car will also be able to connect to your hotspot with Hot-Spot Name and Password.

As far as T-Mobile network access is concerned, T-Mobile has to provide you with a physical WiFi Hot-Spot box. You may or may not have the pay for the hotspot depending on how long you are a T-Mobile or Sprint customer. Then they should offer monthly or annual data plan to activate the Hot-Spot. The Hot-Spot will have a Network Name and Password that will need to be selected with password given with Infotainment>Setting>WiFi. This is pretty much the same as using the phone as a data Hot-Spot.

At least as of now, the ID.4's internal IMEI will not work with T-Mobile.

Since my iPhone gets too hot using the Charging Mat I now USB-C plug-in. This also affords more reliable CarPlay.

Thanks for this entire post. Very helpful. I think there are many people who will find this information helpful going forward!
