19" vs 20" wheels

I'm really enjoying my new 2023 id4 AWD Pro S. As the Pro S it came with 20" wheels and I'm debating switching them out for the 19" wheels when it's time for new tires. I've compiled some questions and comments from reading other posts and I'd love folks feedback or additional thoughts:
  • 20" wheels result in a lower range. I'm not sure why, I would love to learn.
  • 20" wheels look better (I don't really care about this, but lots of people do!)
  • There is no need for updates to the speedometer, tire pressure management, or anything else because the diameter of wheel + tire is the same in both options
  • The 19" tires are a smoother ride.
  • The 19" tires are noisier.
  • The 19" tires last longer with a deeper starting tread.
  • The handling is about equal between the two.
  • There is no benefit to a 20/19 mix between back and front.
  • These benefits and drawbacks may or may not continue down to an 18" tire, but most people are uncomfortable leaving OEM (me too).
Any additional thoughts? Has anyone made the switch from 20 to 19 or vice versa with insight into if it's worth it? Should I specifically find the OEM 19" wheels (I think yes, but has anyone done an aftermarket set?). I punctured a tire near the sidewall within the first week of buying it and I'm definitely interested in getting away from the 20" Pirelli Scorpion tires at $400 each!

Due to the wheels and tires weigh more, and also due to the rolling resistance is higher since 20s don't flex the same. Choose the wrong model of tire and you can lose 14% of your range regardless of size.

No, those 2 depend only on the tire you choose.
The handling is about equal between the two.
No, the 20s are stiffer so better on hard cornering, and worse on hard bumps or washboard.
There are many more choices in 19 than 20 (about 4x as many last time I checked), and they are about half the price.
19s are much less likely to get curb rash on the expensive wheels.
I prefer the stock 19" wheels since its hard to find any aftermarket wheels that are aerodynamic as they are, and also hard to check if the aftermarket wheel has enough weight rating.

SunWizard always so knowledgeable! Thanks!

Has anyone put 18" wheels on here? Curious how much that has affected range. I know from a search that 18" has been occasionally thrown around but just interested. I was just noticing the difference in range with the Ioniq 6 between their SE and SEL RWD and it's pretty significant and the only major difference (that I can see) between their SE and SEL is 18" vs 20". 361 vs 305, respectively. It's also a totally different car with different aero/Cd. I think the switch to 19" is attractive simply for the change in tire replacement cost (when it comes time for that) - though I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes to pay for new wheels for the cost difference in tires to even out.

When I went to my dealer to get winter tires, they first recommended me to downsize by 1 to 18's from 19's but as they do not have much experience with ID4, they confirmed with VW and they denied it, saying VW do not recommend to go any lower than 19 because of car weight (Cant confirm if this is really the truth or they just wanted to get rid of their stock) but they recommended 235 19's square setup for winter. I went with that, paid $2200 CAD + Taxes all in including VW wheels and Continental Vikingcontact 7 235mm tires

Does not have to be another ID.4, model year does not matter, bolt pattern and offset matters. Some other VWs use wheels that will fit but are not as aero. I have not seen any tests to determine how much the less aero would lower your range. To get a high weight rating, get them from a car like the Atlas that weighs close to the ID.4, like this 18" Prisma set that looks nice:
Note one trick is that some wheels require different bolts, and I am not sure how to check that you get the correct bolts with those other wheels. And it would be a pain to keep track of the multiple sets of bolts you have to match them with the wheels.
