Right. Definitely disconnect the battery first before wiring the device unless you have an ODBeleven on hand to clear the error.

I haven't used OBDEleven, but if you have the device you can give it a try. Someone in China sells ODIS-E for only a few dollars. I have posted a post about the specific opening steps. You can click on my homepage to view it.

There are other cheaper elm327 dongles that may work as well but I'm not sure about those.

Locking with the keyfob can be a problem for dog mode. As far as I know, since the car is technically ON, the keyfob will not work. I only use it for camping so I was able to lock from inside with the interior lock controls.

One time I thought I almost lock myself out: One time I went out from the hatch with all the doors locked from inside. None of the 4 doors could be opened even when I had the key with me in my pocket (proximity), and the keyfob also did not work from the outside since the car is technically ON. Fortunately, the hatch will open while having the key within proximity!

So unfortunately dog mode may not work with this mod.
