Tried to use the Car Scanner App today. Everything now seems to be behind a paywall. Pro version needed for everything. Oh well.
Looks like an update rolled out recently. At least on Android. Mine was working this weekend. Now almost all fields say "Available in Car Scanner Pro"I was using mine this morning without any issues on iOS. Not sure what the Pro version offers but it seems all features were available.
Latest on Android is 1.89.9I’m running 1.89.7 releases a week ago. Nothing that I can notice being behind a paywall. In fact I couldn’t even locate where to subscribe to the Pro version within the app, wonder if it’s due to the developer being based in Russia.
I don't mind paying for it. A lifetime version is only $4.49. I like to buy apps that I get use from. Need to support the developers if we want to see support. I was just a bit surprised to see the change with no announcement from the developer.Problem is, if you started a project as open source, or even just freeware, and you want to pursue it enough that it cuts into your other income streams, you have to charge for it.
As long as the dev charges a reasonable price and indeed uses the new profit to put more time into the app. But it's a scuzzy move to pay-wall existing features. Ideally you plan ahead for this transition and start building a backlog of features or even a polished V2 and then sell it as a fresh thing, leaving the old version deprecated.
I've had the app for quite some time (much longer than a week). I've never had to watch any type of advertisement. There have always been banner ads at the bottom though. It was always like this, free trial expired after a week or so, then I paid for Pro. You could watch annoying video ads to continue without payment, maybe this option was removed.
