The issue with Waze (and Google Maps?) not showing directions in the instrument cluster/binnacle is due to them not sending/supporting the necessary features in Carplay that feed into the instrument cluster. In iOS 13, Carplay added a bunch of "second screen" features. See the video at this link. Starts at about the 3 min mark.

In other words, it's not an issue with CarPlay itself, but with the Google and Waze apps. To get this functionality, these apps need to enable it.

I learned something new here. Been using Google Maps—not so great—and using Apple Maps today was much nicer!

Over the past few years Apple Maps has slowly caught up with, and in some ways, exceeded Google Maps for navigation. I ended up deleting Google Maps and going all in on Apple Maps about a year ago, and I haven't missed Google Maps at all.
