My 21 is back at Tom Wood Indy as of Saturday(3-Jun). I already had an appointment for 6-Jun. My 12v battery was low ( threw all kinds or errors after coming home with none) so I charged it over lunch and everything was fine. I quickly called to see if they had a loaner (atlas) and dropped it off that day. Hopefully they don’t update the software a third time and the battery drop is supposed to happen tomorrow and I will get it back by Friday.
Finally all done on mine, 3 modules replaced took about a week to complete. Glad to be wrapped up. We’ll see if I can determine any noticeable difference on the next road trip.

Positive experience at VW of Marietta (Atlanta metro).

Dropped off at 8AM on Monday 6/12/23, started receiving the cascade of app notifications that afternoon. Service advisor called me Tuesday 6/13/23 in the afternoon letting me know car updated fine, battery modules all tested fine and the roof wax was applied and car was in detail shop (I paid for exterior detail since it was there anyways). Car was technically ready when he called but he made some excuse that it needed more calibration or testing on Wednesday but seems he only did this because he was scheduled to be off Wednesday and my car didn't move from its outdoor parking location it was left at after charging on Tuesday - not sure why I couldn't just retrieve my car from another advisor. Oh well - one more day with the 2023 Tiguan SE wasn't any kind of torture.

He did tell me they have been having problems with some ID.4 and mine was an easy one as all the modules played nice during update and none failed, not to mention all the batteries passing module test so your results may vary. My '21 is an October 2021 build so maybe the later build cars are not having the module issues.

Had my car updated with no problems (and no bad modules) last week - also a 2021 Pro S AWD built in late August (delivered in October). I think after the summer break in 2021 Zwickau ironed-out some of the early build issues. Most of the issues I'm hearing with the German builds are early 2021 (e.g. FE, non-AWD) cars.

There might be something to that. My 2021 AWD Pro S was built in December 2021, and it sailed through the update process without any issues at all. Done in two days. The question is, what actually changed between the earlier and later 2021 builds?

Right now, my SA (Sunnyvale VW) said he will get to my car by the end of July!! Took it in on Jun 7 for getting the battery module replaced. I already have the update taken care off through them sometime in Apr/May. They gave me a giant Atlas that is costing me >100$/wk 😤. I asked them if I can take it and get it back once my number comes, they said no!!

I dropped my '21 Pro S off at Leesburg VW in Leesburg FL this morning to get 9302 and 97ZZ addressed. They told me to expect it to be there a minimum of two days and possibly five if any cells need to be replaced.
The Atlas loaner they supplied is in great condition (under 10,000 miles) and not a bad vehicle, but it sure feels antiquated compared to the ID.4. Makes me realize how much I DON'T miss ICE propulsion.

Was just notified that they're replacing some battery modules and to expect it to be done tomorrow. If that holds true, it will have been a 4-business-day job from drop-off to pick-up.

Got my car back from Sunnyvale VW in 2 weeks with 93P7 taken care off. They said it will take 2 months initially.

Picked it up this afternoon, 5 business days in the shop. One HV cell replaced, and did need to re-flash the liftgate controller "as if a new module was put in" to get it to "take".
I had a chance to chat with the tech, an old hand with 45 years at VW. An old hand who likes to keep up on the new stuff. How perfect can it get? He told me that every one of these cars is different, as if they have different personalities. Said mine was pretty easy, but he's had some that drove him crazy. Said the one he finished just before mine took a month to get straightened out.
The dealer experience overall was quite good. They did what they said they'd do promptly and professionally. Very pleasant people.
Changes I noticed on the drive home:
Hill hold actuates with less pressure on the brake pedal than before, and now works in the forward direction too as anti-creep. If you brake gently to a stop it doesn't engage, which I like.
I like the updated instrument cluster screen.
I lost my radio station favorites, saved charging locations, ambient lighting, custom display screens, and a few other settings, but some others survived.
I'm not crazy about the "switch user" prompt on startup in Guest profile. Need to investigate whether setting up a primary user profile will eliminate that.

Driving an ICE vehicle for a week was like going back to the stone age.

Just got my 2021 back from being serviced at Herzog Meier in Beaverton, OR. I was about to schedule somewhere else when Herzog called and said they got a shipment of 12v batteries, seems like that's the limiting factor. Glad I went with them, the process was painless.

Notes:
  • I had an anti-rat flash/buzzer wired to the 12v, disconnected it before taking car in.
  • I have a third party trailer lights module wired in to 12v power inside the trunk. It has no-contact sensors so it did not cause any issues.

Timeline:
  1. Dropped off 6/19 PM. Dealership sent me a service tracker link and contact info to text or call.
  2. 6/20 Day 1 AM - the service status changed to in progress. By 2pm I started getting MyVW notifications, and the app layout changed to the new one for 3.1 cars.
  3. Day 1 Received notifications in bursts every half hour or so until about 6pm on the first day. Battery was 0% for an hour or so.
  4. Day 2 - the SA texts with an attached report. Tried to sell me on $140 for A/C performance fluid and an air filter, declined. Update completed but one battery module needs replaced, they have parts ordered.
  5. I asked about shipping the module, but they have some in stock! They said parts were ordered but then implied they only needed the tools to drop the battery, as if they were being shared between dealerships or they haven't bought them yet.
  6. Nothing over the weekend
  7. Monday 6/26 silence, but a few MyVW notifications.
  8. Tuesday 6/27 AM - car is ready for pickup. Asked SA to check that kick sensor and memory seats are working since I'll have to pickup after hours, they did.

Thoughts:
0. Herzog Meier did a good job. The communication from them before getting an appointment was dumb. I was told a few days before they called to schedule that there was no ETA and they had never updated a car before. Both of which were un-true. But after being handed to the SA comms were great.
1. Wow, the update polished the car. Lots of little things that I didn't know I needed.
2. The infotainment works as soon as the car turns on and is super smooth. Glad the car didn't need a new SoC for a faster infotainment.
3. Auto-hold is great, except when parking. Coming out of a parallel parking spot is tough, tapping Go pedal and then quickly back to brake.
4. Travel assist feels smoother. Maybe it's placebo, but it handled 5pm stop and go traffic more smoothly than I remember. The re-ordering of buttons will take a bit to get used to.
5. After the module swap I'm immediately getting 3.2 - 3.5 mi/kwh. Was 2.8 max before this, even in the summer last year. GOM says 270mi and I believe it.
6. Easy entry is nice! Now I can sit closer to the pedals and not worry about banging my knee on the way out. The chair fights you when you get in though.
7. EQ no longer works? It says it will be available again soon. I wonder if it needs to calibrate or if it's disabled until an OTA.
8. Selecting user profile every time the car starts is annoying, but I can live with it.
9. The app now has vehicle location! Now I can remove my android phone with an IOT sim shoved in the trunk.

Dare I say that the amount of polish in this update surprises me. If it had been an OTA, I would say VW had their shit together. Hoping for 3.2 to come OTA soon, mostly for plug and charge. Otherwise I'd say the car now delivers what was promised at launch.

Nemer VW in Latham, NY was a smooth experience:

  • Dropped off first thing in the morning, got a call to come pick it up two mornings later
  • Got an ICE loaner no problems
  • 97ZZ BMS and 12V no problems
  • 93P7 tested OK (they’ve had to replace a few modules for others and can do in house)
  • Got the roof seal fix and forgot it was a thing until they told me it was done

Auto Hold was a fun treat!

93P7 (battery module) and 55N1 (tailgate hinge seal) actions were completed on my car by Bob Penkhus Volkswagen in Colorado Springs with no drama.

I dropped off the car and it sat in their lot for a week while they struggled with another car. If I had needed my car, I could have picked it up, so I am not going to count that as part of the service time.

By last Friday they were finished with the other car and ready to start mine, but I had a trip planned so they gave me a loaner ID. 4 which I drove 750 miles to Santa Fe and back. My car went into the shop this past Monday and was done on Wednesday. Picked it up this morning, everything seems good.

Yes, the update nerfed the car to only Level 2 charging. It was like having a 2016 e-Golf w/o the DC charging option with twice the battery size & only 50% more range & twice the charge time.

6 weeks later.... On 29 August 2023, I called Montpelier Volkswagen to ascertain the status of the J949 Module back order. To our mutual surprise (the Service Agent & I), the part was schedule to arrive to the dealership on 31 August 2023. Earliest opening was more than 2 weeks later: 11 September 2023.

Vacation plans down the coast of Maine in August were cancelled as a result. No Acadia Nat. Park trip, disappointment for the kids spells that VW has lost 2 potential future customers. Loss of ability to travel beyond my local areas of secured personal charging where I have confirmed lodgings to wait for the car to recharge for the return trip.

My advice to anyone getting this update. Get the loaner. IF J949 fails. REFUSE to give up the loaner. LEAVE YOUR CAR WITH VW TIL IT IS FIXED. Yes, it will inconvenience the dealership, Corporate must feel our financial pain.

I'm bringing mine in next week. I hope I'm one of the lucky ones and don't have problems like this! Mine is a later 2021 and I think I read earlier in this thread that those might go smoother than the earlier 21s so I'm optimistic about my prospects...

I think it would be helpful for those that have successfully had these done to share what dealer they used and how long it took so that other users can identify dealers with experience in their area.

It took my dealer 3 1/2 days to complete these, and I didn't have any bad cells that needed to be replaced.

This was at VW of Alexandria off Gleble Road in Virginia.
In southern CA VW san Bernardino is at 2-3days for software update and battery repair.

I'm happy to report that my experience was smooth. Brought it into Douglas VW in Summit, NJ Thursday morning and it was ready around noon Saturday. Had a Taos for a loaner -- it drove much better than the Tiguan I had gotten at another dealer when I had to have my AC fixed, but of course not as nice as my 2021 ID.4 Pro S RWD.

I just got mine back from the 93P7 and 97ZZ update and everything went fine. It took 6 months after I made the appointment back in April and they are only doing 1 per week. It took 4 days to complete since the VW update server was down for a day right in the middle. No bad HV modules, got a new 12v. Ed Carroll in CO gave me an Atlas cross sport loaner. They also performed the 57J5 door handles and the 97GX wiring harness updates with no problems.

Edit: I checked the work, and its a good thing I did. The positive terminal on my new 12v battery was loose (not even finger tight) and would arc and damage the terminal, and might even come off at any time in the middle of driving, leaving my wife stranded.
