I saw lot of horror stories about the Fitcamx and getting the wire connector undone from the rain sensor. My question is since I already have the HomeLink Mirror would I just use that wire or would I still have to fight to get that other wire to work? I was hoping it maybe an easier install but I am not sure.

TIA

I recently installed the Fitcamx and it was nerve wracking to get that wire off, because it is in there very tight. I don't think it matters whether you have homelink mirror or not, you still need to remove that wire to plug into the fitcamx webcam, then plug the wire from the fitcamx into where you removed the wire.

The problem is that the the wire connection is very tight and it is located rather deep, so it is very hard to get out. Now there is no tab or anything that you need to press to release the connector. It is just very tight, and you can't really grab a hold of the small connector with your fingers. Or even with tools for that matter. If you watch fitcamx's own instruction video, the guy basically loops his finger around the wire itself to yank the connector loose, which is kind of dodgy. I ended up using needle nose pliers to grasp the wire close to the connector, and then firmly but also slowly wiggled it out of the connector. It kind of pinched the wire a bit, and took about 10 nervous seconds or pulling, but I did get it out. After that it is fairly easy to plug it into the camera, then plug the camer's pass through wire back into the connector.

Recording quality is average, but it really does look like an OEM solution, so I've been happy with the fitcamx, since it is by far the most clean looking installation. Fully plug and play too. Only took 10 minutes to install, but that 10-15 seconds spent yanking the wire out is a bit nerve wracking.

Thank you so much. I appreciate this information. I may have to just be brave and do it.

Thanks I read the issue with doing it from the driver's side. I will make sure I do it from the passenger side. Guess I need to look closer at the plug and try your screw driver trick.

Yes there’s 2 connectors and the camera connects to the rain sensor one. That’s the smaller one buried on top of the mirror auto dim / home link connector. When I did mine I had to remove the mirror ( counter clockwise twist) and disconnect the mirror connector to get to the rain sensor connector.

Also, very important to disconnect fuse F44 to minimize potential electrical issues.

Do you just disconnect fuse F44 during install and reconnect it when finished?

I attempted the install, the cam doesn't work, I have error messages, my Driver side door buttons and the light settings don't light up or work anymore. Removed FitcamX, issue persists...

Did I blow Fuse 44? Is this something that has a quick fix?

This dashcam had been a disaster on every step of the install and the installation video is simply false advertising.
1) The top panel never popped off easily, I had to fight it very hard.
2) Pulling the cable out was a nightmare, I ended up using a plier, after an hour of trying with my finger like on the video
3) Then the camera never turned on, but I got 4 error messages.
(I installed from the passenger side)

The instructions say "to avoid error messages", they should f'n say to "avoid frying your car".

Bummer dude. But if it's any consolation, your post is helping others like me decide on an alternate dash cam.

Probably gonna go with a Thinkware with an ODB power installation.

Does anyone know when the windshield is replaced if Safelite or whoever is doing the install has to remove the panel to get into where we install the Fitcamx and mirror? On the 2023 they are going to have a heck of a time prying off that initial cover.

They will remove the cover, casing with the cam and the mirror. The mirror is glued to the windshield and to gain access they need to. They just leave it all dangling and then put it back together.

Might be a good idea to let the installer know of the dashcam. I did as I was concerned with them disconnecting it while powered. That’s when they explained they do not disconnect anything per VW directive.

According to the footage on the dashcam that exactly what they did.

I just installed the Front only FitCamx. Pulled F44 fuse before starting. I did not remove the mirror. Pulling the rain sensor connector was tedious, but eventually got it out by clamping the tips of a long locking hemostat to the base of the connector and wiggling and pulling, this way I was pulling the connector and not the wires.

The flat VW trim would not fit perfectly in the new FitCamX cowl, but close enough to make the camera look pretty OEM.

Tip - remove the opaque blue plastic from the lens before sliding the cowl into place and replacing the VW flat cover. Hard to do after the camera is fully installed.

Tried the install yesterday. I did not see this post prior and just followed the instructions of keeping the FOB away, sitting on the passenger side etc. Removing the plastic trims were fairly easy. Getting the cable out was ok. The trick is to push down the bottom plug to get it out of the way a bit. I used the same blue panel remover fitcamx provided to nudge the power plug/connector. Once I finished, I got 4 errors! I then realized that I had to plug that connector from the fitcamx back to the place where I pulled it from. So I did attempt #2. Put everything back together and still, the errors are there! I discovered fuse #44 was blown. At this point I just removed the dang camera and replaced the blown fuse. The errors went away after a couple of restarts. Wow what a pain in the ass!!! I installed/hardwired dashcams in my other cars before and never had this much pain.

Now I'm debating whether to try again by pulling #44 first before starting. That or just throw the box back to fitcamx.

I was unable to remove the rain sensor plug, and went to a professional car accessory installer to do it for me, and he had one hell of a time doing it, even with all his sophisticated tools. So long as you don't sit in the driver's seat to do it, you don't have any electrical problems. Trying to do it myself was a nightmare, as just removing the plastic cover behind the mirror was a real battle.

I installed the Fitcamx couple of days ago, I didn't remove fuse as recommended (no errors) and did everything from the passenger side, the connector is difficult to remove but if you wiggle it side to side while pulling it ,will come out eventually.
installing the rear mounted camera will come with some work, ran the cables underneath the airbags so not to get in the way of their intended operation, unclip and pulldown the back en of the roof liner, I used Tesa tape to avoid rattles and extra large Zip ties from Harbor Freight to pull the cable, be very careful when removing the rubber boot clips, very easy to brake if done incorrectly.
