That's awesome! I've been wondering what software US cars have been leaving the factory with. 3.0 makes sense since that's what's being delivered in Europe. Let's see what the update brings once these cars begin to get released to customers.

From the same rumour mill, current cars need some work at a dealer or at the port before OTA will function.
That is ok with me (taking to dealer)- although I’m not confident my dealer has a clue how to do it, and I would just as soon mine not be the first one they do.
But it is going in next thurs (June 16) to (hopefully) properly diagnose my lack of heater (they couldn’t last time). So perhaps if it is that close it could be done too? I’m leaving the car.

it’s not that there aren’t knowledgeable EV techs out there, it’s the dealers that won’t send those techs to classes to become certified by VW to work on them. The other problem is too many techs don’t have the minimum required classes completed to become eligible for EV certifications. The other issue is tech resistance to leaning and some don’t want to go to the EV classes unless forced to go. I’m not currently a tech for VW, yet have my ASE Master with A9 hybrid and EV and wasn’t sent. I left being a technician for VW and now I’m a Software Engineer on Electric Vehicles. The dealerships don’t know what’s about to hit them and aren’t attracting the talent, especially on a flat rate pay plan and not investing in the required tools and equipment. This is an industry wide issue they should have been developing at least two years ago.

 

If the new ID.4s come with software version 3.0, why are they sitting at the ports instead of being shipped to the dealers? What are they waiting for at the ports?

I’m reminded of the switch from analog film projectors to digital projectors in movie theaters around 2013. If you were a cinema tech or engineer and refused to accept and prepare for your looming digital future, you’re either retired now (or unemployed by choice), or you’re working at Radio Shack. Oops, wait, scratch the Radio Shack option.

 

What if cars manufactured in Germany were all built with a "European 3.0" installed
so they could easily be moved around there before shipping and are being held in
port here in the US for a certified/approved version of "US 3.0" being installed before
they get anywhere near US roads and dealership? That's my bet. It would be impossible
to get dealers to hold onto the cars and not drive them / demo them while waiting.

 

I'm still expecting "US 3.0" is 3.1. But whether that turns out to be the case or not, it seems we'll know fairly soon. Or not? The release to transport date of June 14th was (ETD) per that photo posted by @CincyDiscgolfer.

I'm a bad person so I would find it funny if all the speculation was wrong and people receive their cars with 2.1, just because of the excitement that would create on the internet. 🤡

 

I think what may be going on per Chris at battery life is that 2.4 was jus finalized last week for distribution in Europe. He said that batteries are being delivered to dealers this week, so that the update can be done in the next few weeks. i am hoping my car gets released from port soon.

 

I need an EV to take to Canada in 2 weeks. My ID.4 is sitting in port. I don’t want to take my Model Y (I’m going to try to keep it prestine so that I could ttrade it in for something bigger that will hopefully come out some time next year. The ID.4 would be ideal for me to get right about now. Otherwise, I will be dropping around $1600 on gas during this trip.

 

Do Tesla depreciate 1600$ in just 1 trip?

Regardless, VW sold us scheduled charging, and they've apparently finally fixed scheduled charging as of 2.4, so we'll all finally get it. But I agree, if not already mandatory, it needs to be. Even though some EVSEs can perform that function, requiring it to be baked in to the car is low hanging fruit.

 

I have my 1 year service appointment at the dealership tomorrow. It will be interesting to see if they know anything.

2.4 has yet to be seen in the wild. It's so weird, you either got 2.3 or 3.0 in Europe, but if you got 2.3 you're stuck until VW re-starts the 2.4 appointments.

 

Solar panels would certainly be nice- but where I live, this far north and lots of cloudy days…pretty expensive for the return.
While I have super cheap electricity ($0.06 kWh) and no ‘off peak’ discount, I would still charge off peak whenever possible just to help out with the grid loads.
Hopefully the updates will be sooner than later- but I have no confidence it will not be quite a few more months.

 

Our climate here is not exactly mostly sunny either.

My electric heater failed after 500 miles. error codes and the heat part is greyed out in screen. I suspect element, connection or perhaps even faulty fuse. Two month wait to even properly diagnose (or more)

 

If specialists are needed at that scale to update '22 production, this doesn't bode well for those of us like you and myself who own 21s.

But sure, I'm willing to admit anything is possible, and at this point I keep expecting VW to be shy to promise anything and surprise us all with the great news of a rollout finally underway.

I think we can conclude that. There are very large VW facilities at Houston and Baltimore (and maybe Davisville) vs. mostly intermodal facilities in Jacksonville, San Diego and Benecia.

They could deliver it to me without a battery. I will get one in an auto-parts store myself and even pay for it.

The 12 volt changeover is not a requirement for OTAs, it seems it will be treated as a service bulletin or recall conveniently performed at the same time as the 2.4 update. I haven't seen recent reports of what battery the factory is pushing out at this point.

He didn't seem to have any expertise with the ID.4 because I was there when the technician was reviewing the service and he was explaining things like the service advisor had never seen one before, so I wouldn't take that as an indication that there's nothing out there, but definitely no confirmation or active campaign to make changes.

I can't say I'm surprised. It seems with all the difficulty and presumed delays VW has had and continues to be having with respect to software, their strategy has clearly shifter to "clam up" and "loose lips sink ships." We haven't heard a peep from Dustin Krause for a while, there's not much in the official channels other than the Diess AMA and the June 14 port release notations, and the various "software update" / "wiring harness" explanations given to 2022 order holders.

I think VW is withholding info from dealers in the same manner, because nothing is firm, and they don't want to be accused of making promises that fall through. So instead we get reports that "we're stocking up on 16gb USB drives" and waiting for confirmation that a pallet of odd ball 12 volt batteries showed up on the receiving dock.

 

I would love to get solar, but a few different companies have told us we'd need to cut down a large number of mature Oak trees on our lot... something we're loathe to do (three reasons: they're beautiful, it seems counter-intuitive to destroy trees to help the planet by putting in solar, and it would cost as much as the solar project just to take them down). I wish community solar was more widely advertised in more places in the US!
