If you weren't using timed charging, it would turn green almost right away while charging, and then turn white when it was done (and I presume it also indicates the pin in unlocked).

Red usually indicates a fault of some sort, but if your EVSE is using timed charging, the car probably recognizes that it was plugged in, but was confused as to why it was that it wasn't getting any juice.

I don't think my car recognizes when it is confused.

 

Does your EVSE do some sort of on-off timing on its own? If so, that would probably would provoke the car to complain at the EVSE's programmed shut-off time and then operate normally at the EVSE's programmed turn-on time.

 

Depending on ID4 year and software version, this is another issues that could be on EVSE communication interruption side.

 

I’ve seen it turn red if the charging cable isn’t inserted fully so it latches…

 

The cable is fully inserted and latched.

 

After reading all replies, I'm convinced this has been happening all along and I just didn't notice it. The car is always charged to where it was set to charge to. I guess I'll just keep watching it and wondering.

My Chevy Volt has the option to sound an alarm (like the burglar alarm horn pattern) if the charging is interrupted. We learned very quickly to disable that feature! The ID.4 seems to be doing the same thing but with more subtlety. ;-)

 

My 2021 with original software does the same sequence of lights when connected to the Wallbox with timed charging. It always manages to charge to 80% once charging starts (at midnight in my case). I think you can safely ignore the red light.

I have the Electrify America wall charger. For me, there is an auto charge which charges as soon as I plug in and the lights indicate normal i.e white/green. The other option is remote charge for control either from my phone. If I have remote charge enabled and plug in I get the red light and I can't use my phone to start the charge cycle. But, if I have a schedule set the red light also comes on but the scheduled charge will work. Not the ID schedule option obviously, but the schedule that set by Electrify America charger/Xcel Energy for off peak.
