New Problem with Apple CarPlay & Apple Maps

This is a 2021 ID 4 Pro-S RWD. Wireless Apple CarPlay has worked very well up until this week. All my navigation has been done with Apple Maps on the infotainment screen. I’m using the iPhone 14 Pro with iOS 17.4.1 All apps are up to date. Problem: Apple Maps will not show the map on the Infotainment screen. It appears as a grey field. At times Maps starts out just fine and while driving the map goes completely grey or part of it goes grey. If I switch to navigate using the ID4 built in Navigation all works perfectly well. I find the built in an ok navigation app, but Apple Maps is what I’m used to.

Question: Since nothing else has changed with the car, where should I look for the cause? iOS 17.4.1 ?. The cars Bluetooth module and where might that be located? All other Bluetooth functions linked to my phone are working well. How would I test to narrow down the cause? And, finally, has anyone else experienced this situation? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Here are a few troubleshooting questions to try and pinpoint where the problem might be occurring:
  • Did you try zooming in or out of Apple Maps in CarPlay? Are there only gray tiles at all zoom levels?
  • Do Maps display correctly in wired CarPlay mode?
  • Do other maps apps (like Google Maps) display maps properly in CarPlay mode?
  • Did you try the good ol' iPhone "reboot-and-see-if-that-fixes-it" troubleshooting step?
  • Did you try removing the car from CarPlay and re-pairing the phone with the car?
  • Did you try to "Reset network settings" on the iPhone?
  • Did you try rebooting the ID.4 infotainment system? (Press and hold the On/Off button on the lower left of the infotainment console for about 10-15 seconds until you see the VW logo appear).
  • Could it be a general problem with Apple Maps in your locale? I recall a similar issue a few years ago where certain areas around Boston were rendering as gray squares on Apple Maps in CarPlay, and it was an issue with the Apple Maps backend that eventually got fixed after a few days. Maybe do a web search to see if other Apple Maps CarPlay users are having the same problem in your area?
If you still can't figure out what's happening, one workaround might be to download the Apple Maps for your area so that you can use them in offline mode.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Some on your list I have done but will test each to see if I can narrow down the issue. The car is at the dealer now for Door Handle recall and I mentioned this Apple Maps issue to the service writer. He made an entry on the work order so will also get an opinion from the ID4 tech when I pick up the car. Also, I now see other “Related Threads” pop up so will read them to see how others resolved their problem. Thanks again.

I would also recommend testing with a different iPhone / different iOS if possible. This might help to narrow down the culprit(s). I know that the previous iOS update for my phone caused issues with wireless carplay. Solution for me was two-fold: subsequent iOS update (patch) and then a full reset factory of the infotainment with a clean connection. A bit of a hassle but completely worth the time as it works consistently now, no issues.

I've also had generally buggy performance with CarPlay since updating to 17.4.1. Not just maps, but music & podcasts will also cut out and occasionally I'll just lose the connection to CarPlay altogether. I assume it's an iOS issue since my VW software hasn't changed.

I’m beginning to believe this is an iOS problem that started with the latest iOS update 17.4.1 and not an ID4 issue. When bringing up Maps on my phone (away from the car) I’m just getting the spinny ball thing and no routing to my selected destination. Other CarPlay apps seem fine. I think the best thing to do is use the built in Nav and wait for Apple to fix Maps. Thanks for everyone’s input.

. have the same problem. When connected to CarPlay, the navigation via Apple Maps has problems saying to turn when it shouldn't. This has just begun in the last couple of months. When I disconnect from CarPlay, navigation on my iPhone 14 PromMax (ios 17.4.1), the navigation works fine on the phone but when connected to CarPlay, the navigation gives the same incorrect directions on both the phone & on the navigation shown on my 2020 Atlas Cross Sport's screen. This also happens when using my wife's iPhone which is the same model & iOS version as mine. Lastly, when using Waze connected to CarPlay, the navigation has the same issues. Seeing so many posts about this at various websites with people using CarPlay with different iPhones in different cars, I would expect Apple to figure this out & issue a fix.

Just wondering, could this be a carrier issue? I’m using T-Mobile with iPhone 14 Pro. I went to the car dealer and had the ID4 tech look at the error messages. He was able to delete my phone and link his phone to my car and navigate without a problem. After he restored my Iphone to the car the problem went away. I don’t consider that a solution and it certainly does not explain why all navigation apps suddenly stopped working. But, in any case, I’m back to having all navigation, Apple Maps, Google Maps and Waze all working well again.

Might be worth considering the current magnetic field situation if these are recently occurring issues. Solar storms impact more than 'seeing the Northern Lights' when they hit us. The network(s) and GPS could certainly be affected. I'll leave this for the more scientifically versed members, but thought it worth mentioning.

Case in point that the in-vehicle CarPlay interface App just can't keep pace with iOS updates. The iPhone software as we know often requires security updates and thereby always the chance of breaking an interface.

Reminds me of my delivery day when my salesman wasn't able to affiliate my then new iPhone 12 with EA but I was able to do so a week or so later (code provided me) when a new iOS update was available.
Always a moving target it is. -Yoda

I’m having a similar issue after installing 17.5.1 on my iPhone 12 Pro. Apple Maps, Google Maps or other apps that use GPS; do not work when I’m inside my 2021 VW Tiguan.

When I’m outside the car the map apps are displayed correctly on my phone. I can view the local map and can successfully set a destination.

However, when I get into the car, with the same map active and displayed on my phone, and wirelessly connect to CarPlay the existing map fails. I’m unable to set a destination.

These same apps work fine when I’m in the car if I disable CarPlay. As soon as I enable CarPlay the map display will start to disappear as I drive away from the current location.

Bottom line, if I want to use a map app I must disable CarPlay and use the app from my phone. I’m unable to use CarPlay if I want to use GPS.

Other apps work correctly, these include Phone, Messaging, Podcast, Music, etc. As long as the app doesn’t use GPS.

I have also discovered that Safari and Find My apps do not work if my phone is connected to CarPlay, even though the apps aren’t installed onCarPlay. Again, if I disable CarPlay the app works fine.

I’ve reset my phone and reinstalled iOS 17.5.1. I’ve rebooted the VW infotainment system. Yesterday I talked to an Apple Genius Bar tech, he said it was a VW problem. Today I talked with a service tech at the local VW dealership, he said it’s a known Apple iOS CarPlay issue and that Apple is working on a solution but the availability date is unknown. I asked for a copy of the VW email he referenced, but he couldn’t find, said he would forward me a copy when he finds it - I not holding my breath.

Ditto all of that. Google and Apple maps just stopped working on both iPhones (so it's not the phone), both of which are running ios 17.5.1. CarPlay insists on connected to 2021 id.4 (S/W 3.1.0) via WiFi to use Apple Car Play. BlueTooth connection works for playing music, etc, but does not bring up Car Play. Hard wire to front USB port doesn't work at all as far as I can tell. It appears that CarPlay is incapable of using cellular data, and I'm not enthused about connecting Car-Net through Verizon for another $20/mo. Does anyone know if that works?

Wireless CarPlay works over WiFi. That's just the way it works.

It's unclear whether you've tried forgetting the car's WiFi network in iOS settings, which is the usual fix for the problem you're seeing. If the phone connects to the car only for CarPlay, it will not try to use that connection for internet access. But if it has ever been connected to the hotspot directly, it will always try to do so (which sounds like the problem you're having). Forget the network, do not reconnect to the hotspot, and let CarPlay re-establish the wireless connection in the background.
