First, I would like to thank pioneers for publishing their procedures To replace the sensor. Midwestchill and Rcppharmd. After doing what, I considered adequate research even to the point of sending the Vin number to a seller on eBay to order the sensor. It turns out it didn’t fit. The sensor was a 1EA919275A my broken part number is 5WA919275A picture attached. The plug is keyed and from the picture you can see the internal tabs in the female parts are in different locations. Further research, I found a picture on eBay of somebody selling sensors out of a bumper from a used ID.4 From the picture attached you can see the tabs you have to lift off the sensor. All references to orientation are for the inner sensor, passenger side. Now I made my next mental slip. I used the part number from the ebay picture 5WD and not 5WA part number from my bad part off the car. I did not realize this until I received the part today. It should be noted that every time I looked up the 5WD, part number, it always referred to being appropriate for the ID.4.
Having done what I consider due diligence the second time, I took a flyer and ordered the part on AliExpress.
two pieces 5WD919275A total cost delivered under $35. Yes, less than $17 apiece.
I received it today and the keys all match the car wire plug so that they plug inserted correctly into the sensor. The only difficulty I had was that the sensor body is also keyed to the car and can only go in one Way with the wire pointing to the left or to the right.
Process
Removal of the sensor was a minor difficulty. You have to push in on the center of the sensor while lifting the upper and lower tab that holds the sensor in place see photo attached. Once the sensor was loose, there’s adequate wiring to work it through the grill so that you can unhook the wire from the sensor. All you have to do is move the gray tab up and then gently pull the plug off. Total time 20 min. Probably because I didn’t have the second picture yet which showed me the location of the tabs and know how to remove it.
installation was just reversing the steps of removal, plug the wire into the sensor, set gray tab, work it through the grill and then put it into the hole of the grill where it locks in place. You need to be aware that the sensor is also keyed to the hole that it is installed in the grill, and you end up with the female case resting in the vertical position and shown in the picture if it doesn’t go very easy in all likelihood, you need to rotate 180° and it will snap in, in my case, I struggle a couple of minutes trying to figure out why it wouldn’t go in the hole and then took it out looked at it and realized that the housing of the sensor is keyed flipped it over and it snapped right in
Took the car out for a test drive. There was no calibration necessary And the parking sensors behaved the way they were supposed to and my orange warning light is out.
I tore the sensor apart just out of curiosity, being an engineer, the rear of the sensor has a printed circuit board with a fairly good size chip, it has a soft sponge like material between the chip and the face of the sensor; 2 thin, soft wires connect the circuit board to the aluminum face of the sensor. The face, which is exposed to the road is soft aluminum, and is like a diaphragm with a piece attached to the back of it it’s fairly easy to see why a stone from the road could put a nick in the face of the sensor and caused it to fail.
The only question I posed to the group is, does anybody know the difference between the 5WA and the 5WD parts other than the fact that one’s manufactured in Spain and the other ones manufactured in China?
