Service Position for Wipers

As far as I know there are 3 ways to get the wipers into service position: first is from the vehicle menu, second is from the exit screen where its one of the options, and third is to press the wiper button on the end of the stalk as you are exiting.

All of these approaches I have used, but here's my question. None of them work consistently or all the time. Most notably the two approaches using menus, about half the time, the option to put the wipers in service position is greyed out.

As an example, yesterday I had some errands to do. When I got to the first stop, as I exited the car the exit menu had the service position option greyed out. Did my errand, got back in the car and drove to a second location. As I exited the service position option was now available. No other changes. Similarly I have used the "stalk button" most often but sometimes it works and sometimes not. On my Tiguan pressing the wiper stalk down after the car is shut off but before exiting always works.

Am I doing something weird/wrong, or is there something I am missing?

This is the wrong forum for you… this is for the ID vehicles

He talks about a button on the wiper stalk… we don’t have a button on your wiper stalk to my knowledge. We activate the washer by pulling the stalk towards us.

Just push the wiper stalk down after shifting into park and turning off the “ignition”.

As my avatar says I have a 2024. Wiper “stalk” has a button in the end for single wipe and a rotary switch for off/intermittent or rain sense/on/high. I am talking about an ID.4.

Like I said: according to the manual and via actual usage I have used all three methods to park the wipers. What my question is, is why do they not always work (ie menu item greyed out)?

One more observation from yesterday: came to end of trip, got the exit menu with the option not greyed out, sat for a few seconds (looking for something) and option greyed out while I was sitting there. I know on many cars you have to park the wipers within a set time so that may be true here too.

Since the menu methods are greyed out, have tried doing the infotainment shutdown using the on console power button by holding it for 15 seconds or until it shuts down. This recommended method has cleared up a few things for me.

@Jupiter : agree that the button and rotary switch is inferior to the older design, but when they moved the “transmission” control off the binnacle they needed to move the wiper control and the turn signal/headlight beam stalk was already there…. So they compromised I assume.

Will try infotainment reboot but doubt that’s the problem. They greyed out menu items are not always grey and as I mentioned they switch from “on” to grey even as I watch.

Oh, you get the Buzz style shifter on the column in the 24? Interesting, thanks! Sorry for the confusion!

I’ve never noticed the Service Position button greyed out on mine, but I don’t look every time I park.
