Prototyping the mirror replacement didn't require any of the 'usual VW' hard-to-snap on/off parts, I did it all with my bare (clean) hands.

Trying to replace the filler for the trailer wiring was a whole different beast at this point though - more on that tomorrow when I get it back together properly...

Standard FE mirror does NOT have a compass..

I got my Homelink mirror today. it came with programming instructions, a spare? cable, and some cable ties:

The installation is exactly the same as the Golf R video, the only difference is the plastic housing:

It comes off in two pieces, first you need to remove the lower piece, I started with a guitar pick to pry it apart, but as Swimrwo says you can just use your hands to remove it.

2182

That leaves the upper portion of the housing, and you remove it the same way, from the top pull down and a bit towards the front of the dash dashboard

2183

Then kind of wiggle it around the mirror to remove.

Twist the mirror holder firmly counter clockwise (it's in there solidly), until it unclicks, and pull down.

The connector is in there solidly as well, I had to hold it with vise grips to pull it apart, if you have a stronger grip you could probably pull them apart by hand.

Then reverse all the steps with the new mirror, power up the car, use the instructions for programming your remote, and drive around the block to calibrate the compass:

Congratulations @bottyguy on your successful installation and for showing all the deets.

So the new mirror has a compass? Is it part number: 000072548L, or did you get a different one?

i ordered online and picked up at a dealership, I had to select a different dealership because the order form wouldn’t let be chose my closer one. Which was weird because I have ordered and picked up at the local one before.

I dunno about everyone else, but me personally, yes the idea of an internet connected "smart" garage opener is attractive, but at the same time I still have reservations about my garage door or my house's door locks being online. I know the actual chances of something getting "hacked" are pretty low, but I like the old fashioned security of just knowing that if my door is locked, you need a physical key to get into it (or brute force of course, but that's beside the point). I say this as a guy in my 20s who has quite a lot of other things in my life internet connected and "smart-ified", if you will.
For me, the best/most convenient/ most secure solution is a smart garage door opener remote (e.g. Meross), that functions in the HomeKit ecosystem. Nothing is internet based or remote, as the hub sits in my house. My phone is secure (requires physical possession plus authentication to unlock the phone). I can use voice to open the garage door via my phone or watch, and I could use geofencing to automatically open the door when I arrive home. Cost was under $50 US.

Highly recommended.

Nicely done and thanks! My dealer wanted to charge me 3 (THREE!!) hours of labor for this. I think I'm going to go ahead and order and DIY thanks to your description.

Aside from the obvious homelink buttons and the compass is there anything else different about the mirror? Size? Dimming? Integrated camera :)

It seems to have slightly more mirror area, and it doesn't have a bezel around the edge. They are about the same width, the homelink is a bit taller. The view seems a bit better with the homelink, but that just might be $256 convincing me of that.

The homelink mirror is on top in this photo:

@bottyguy Could you also please tell us if the Homelink buttons are functional when you are in the car and it is off? I'd like to make sure that my garage cannot be opened when the car is off / no FOB present.
The mirror seems to be powered only when the car is "on". If I open the door and get in, the dash turns on but not the mirror. I have to put my foot on the brake and "power on", at which point the mirror turns on. So just opening the door and pressing the homelink button will not open the garage door.

I was thinking about this and whether I liked or disliked it. And it occurred to me that this is actually a good security feature, because the only way to use this then is to have the key on you, right?

Get a WiFi enabled garage door opener or update your opener to make it WiFi enabled, and use your phone to open the garage.
Amazon has a WiFi controller one can install in your garage for any garage door opener since 1993 that you control from your phone or any smart device. Nor only can you open the door with it, you can monitor the door's activity on your phone from anywhere. https://www.amazon.com/Smart-Garage...D3D9YJ/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=chamberlain+myq-g0401&qid=1617402854&sr=8-5

Windy in central MD today. My FE was very stable, I guess because of the low center of gravity 😎.
Addendum: travel assist sucks in heavy gusts👎. To be expected.
Guy in Tesla checked me out on the interstate. Came up behind me, circled around me then gave me a thumbs up 👍. Then continued on up ahead.
Have you tried how it changes in different driving modes? Travel assist can run in regular or sport mode. I wonder if the tighter handling would help?
