First major road trip!

We’re heading to Northern California coast tomorrow (two days of driving), I’m looking for recommendations for best EA charging stops.

The first leg of the trip is from Blaine to Olympia or Tacoma for lunch, that’s about 175 miles so a likely place for the first charging stop. Any charger in that area that is preferred or that should be avoided? A friend suggested the EA charger in Olympia (Target Place Plaza).

The next leg would be on to Corvallis Oregon for an overnight, 200 miles. I’m thinking of charging somewhere in the Portland area, maybe at Woodburn? I think there’s some options south of there as well.

Day 2 is Corvallis to Arcata. Seems like Grants Pass is a mandatory stop before heading out to Crescent City, so maybe pick up a charge in Eugene or Sutherland?

Thanks!

Greetings! My husband and I drove to Guerneville, California from the Portland area around this same time of year last year and took our ID.4. We lucked out that every charging stop had at least one available charging station that worked, but we commonly ran into issues, and it being July 4 weekend, I imagine the number of people needing to charge was higher than usual. Hopefully the reliability since that time has improved, but I'd definitely do the drive again.

That said, we have used the Eugene (Springfield, to be more exact) EA during two separate trips. It's at a shopping center that has a Target and a couple other restaurants, so there are things to do. The one in Sutherlin is at a Dairy Queen and seems like a really odd location for one, but does have a Starbucks and Shell convenience store nearby, and it is right off the freeway. The Grants Pass location is similar to Eugene/Springfield in that it has a good amount of things nearby to go to.

From there we kept to I-5, so I can't speak for any charging experiences on the California coast, but they at least look spaced close enough to stop at each, top up enough to get to the next stop (with some to spare), and keep the trip going. South of Eugene, I think we stopped at every single EA just to make sure we did not get stranded, and we did great. I think we got as low as 12% SoC but I didn't have any range anxiety.

Enjoy your drive! I and probably others would appreciate how your experience went.

I've done the I-5 part many times. I wish there were more chargers along this route (especially between Seattle and Portland) but it's relatively easy to do.
For the first stop, I always charge at Lacey Walmart EA. Six chargers and there's a good Vietnamese and a Thai restaurant that isn't bad nearby. The only issue is that Lacey (and Olympia) is a bit too close, you'll arrive with quite a bit of charge from Blaine. It would have been better if there would have been an EA charger 20-30 miles south of Olympia.
Woodburn EA is indeed the next logical step. I never had any issue with this station. Always plenty available and they're always fast. Do read the Plugshare comments on how to access the chargers after the mall closes (only the southwest entrance is open after hours).
However, if you're able to charge overnight on an L2 charger in Corvallis, you probably can skip Woodburn (assuming you charged to 100% while having lunch in Lacey).
You might need a quick top up at Surtherlin EA. Unfortunately, it's one of the most busy and least reliable stations on the route. So be prepared for to spend extra time there. The location is not great either. Avoid the Dairy Queen. The McDonald's is okay-ish.
Grant Pass is usually the next stop. The chargers worked well the times I charged there and the locals are... interesting. I met a few people who never saw an EV before and were genuinely interested. Especially when they heard about three years of free charging.
I don't have experience with the chargers along Highway 1.

We just got back from doing a roundtrip from Chico Ca. to Anacortes Wa. I-5 all the way. All using Electrify America. Grants Pass Walmart. Sutherlin Dairy Queen (no waiting good chargers), Albany Walmart, Tigard Walmart, Tualatin Walmart,

Kelso Wa. 3 Rivers Mall, Lacey Walmart, Federal Way Walmart (problem with chargers).

Walmarts have nice restrooms!

Thanks for all the guidance! We’ve just completed the Washington to California part of our trip. We stopped in Lacey, Kelso, overnight in Corvallis, then Springfield, Grants Pass, and Crescent City to reach Arcata. No problems charging, didn’t have to wait though a couple of locations had all of the units in play. The only issue was about half of the units didn’t recognize my virtual EA card, so I had to use the app to start the session.

Southern Oregon was tough only in that we’d planned on eating lunch in Grants Pass, and due to a series of mishaps ended up skipping lunch and soldering on, which was not a great experience. On the return trip, I will do more planning around where we’re stopping for meals.

The car is so comfortable and easy to drive. Sport mode is great for the twisties of the California coast, Driver Assist works great, the AC is powerful. I’ve done two very long days in the car and I’m not the least bit sore. Mentally tired, yes 😸
