I got this message and the screen would not display driving speed or range. This is a very disconcerting problem.

I didn't get a picture of it as I was in a hurry and just jumped into another car I had available. I did drive it around the block to confirm it was drivable and if it was just a delay in the system booting up. No luck.

When I got back and took it to the dealer, of course it wasn't doing it at that point. They didn't seem to know what it was. So now it is there pending checking for codes and diagnosis.

Anyone with info on what this screen means? What is the problem/fix? Is it serious or impact reliability?

Thanks

Here you go. Happened to me the other night. Was weird trying to figure out how fast to go without speeding or going so slow that people behind me would get mad. Once I parked it for about 15 minutes, it was gone. Seems like a startup bug that can be cleaned up with a software patch. Hopefully coming in 2.3, as I don’t know how I’ll explain to the officer that I didn’t know how fast I was going because I didn’t have a speedometer on my new car. [emoji15]

This happened with my ID.4 1st Edition quite frequently. I could make it happen reliably by visiting a specific parking lot about 1 mile south of my dealer.

At the first service visit, VW had the dealer's tech clear all of the error messages. Two days later, the errors (and lack of speed and other data) started happening again.

At the second service visit, VW had the tech replace the gateway computer (J533). This is the computer that collects data from all different parts of the car and passes it on to the dashboard/UI side of the car. VW customer care and the dealer's tech both explained to me that they needed to replace the gateway computer because of a bug in the software. Replacing the computer would install a version that did not have the bug in it.

The car has functioned without trouble now for close to a month.

I encourage you to bring it to your dealer and have them work with VW to get this fixed. You may also want to call VW Customer Care. They helped my dealer get the replacement computer in a week rather than the original 6-8 weeks.

Interesting that they couldn’t just update the software and had to replace the hardware to fix a bug in the system…if it happens again, I will bring it in.

VW TECHNICIAN weather was similar to Curious1 but soc was about 55%. When getting in the car, I don’t remember it feeling uncomfortably hot.

I wish there was a way to “file a bug” with VW without having to drive to the dealership. We have all experienced multiple software issues and I feel like VW is only getting informed about the issues from vehicles that end up at the dealership for days at a time. Taking the car in is stressful because dealerships are almost always never helpful and make it seem like nothing is wrong with the car.

I spoke to the service writer when I stopped in to my dealer a few weeks ago and I can tell he had no interest in discussing the issues I had with the tail light buldging and 3rd brake light trim piece gap. If VW could make it easy to submit an issue with the vehicle, they would be better informed about the number of people experiencing the same issues.

I know that when it’s software related they want to plug the car in to see what comes up, but at the same time the car is a computer that has internet access. They could have developed a read-only diagnostic tool to save us all the headache of driving to a dealership, have the service writer look at us like we are dumb, fight to get a loaner, and be without our car for days or weeks. If this is the next era of vehicles, they need to also provide the next era of service.

Alright, I’m done ranting. I just hope they are monitoring these forums and doing some good with it.

I wish that the mass-market OBDII scanners could scan for fault codes.

The thing I don't know is whether the telematics automatically uploads fault codes to VW as they happen. In theory it could, since we all have the cellular connection.

As it happens, I have VAG-COM, but that's kind of an expensive tool for most people.

My lucky day, just got this error code after a day trip down the coast. Taking it in tomorrow to have the dash screen replaced because of dead pixels. Will add this problem to the list for the dealer.

Well it just cleared. Another mystery.

I got this message yesterday 2 hours into a 3hour trip. Stopped for a recharge for 25 min and still no display info, including charge info. However car-net was working. Drove for another hour without display info. Parked for 4 hours and display was back. OK so far today.

Happened to me / my Pro S earlier this week, right after charging. I drove home with the warning light. A couple hours later, went to the store and it had cleared the warning. Haven't seen the warning again, was going to chock it up to a fleeting gremlin... but seeing other folks have had a component error / replacement, I may check with service dept. next week...

This happened to me. It happened the same day that my free, one-month trial of the Verizon mobile hotspot expired. I'm not sure if there was a correlation.

For some, the problem went away after turning the car off for a while. That didn't work for me. My car stayed this way for about 48 hours. I read other people who had to go to the dealer to clear the codes, or even have a computer component replaced. I didn't want to go through the hastle of that.

I decided to disconnect the negative battery cable, and I left it disconnected for about 5 minutes before reconnecting it. That worked, and the warning went away. Initially, when I started the car after reconnecting the battery cable, I had several messages saying that the driver assist and other features were unavailable. But after I stopped and started the car again, everything was running fine. Perhaps the system needed time to reboot/restart everything. I'm not sure. I'm just grateful that it works again. It's been five days since I disconnected and reconnected the battery cable, and no return of the warning

This problem is still around and the VW folks are still clueless about what to replace or fix. The error messages from the OBDEleven indicate that there was a problem with message traffic on the bus. The software apparently does not even try to recover. Just throws up the message and then waits for a long reset.

It has been updated on new software and ... most of this are can bus time out for responses. Calibration values have been changed and bugs eliminated.
I can't provide more insight besides official VW Channels.

I also got this message. I was driving the car on a 200 mile trip when it appeared. I stopped the car to charge half way, and the message did not go away. 200 miles of driving with no speedometer, no cruise control, no safety monitors, did not make me feel safe. When I arrived at my destination, the car was parked for 3 days, the message went away. It has not come back since.

Out of Spec Reviews has a You Tube video posted regarding this error. It appears to only happen in the FE. With so many people having this issue, maybe there should be a recall to get it fixed.

I have a Chevy Bolt. Every once in a while I have a completely blank screen. Very disconcerting. Seems like a problem not just with ID 4s. I guess it's the reality of software in cars.

This just happened (first time) on my vehicle yesterday. Been driving it 15 months. It’s clearly a computer problem/glitch/bug/feature/hack. Any updates here? Parked in my garage now and fingers crossed that it boots up properly (or goes away) in the morning. Wow, this is way lame.
Thanks for any feedback.
