Question -- is the noise noticeable on all road surfaces or just certain ones? Over the years, I noticed that some highway surfaces, particularly some grooved concrete ones, can be quite noisy. There is a one mile section of highway on my regular to-from work drive that is much noisier than the rest of the route. And, while I haven't experience this yet in my ID4, gusty winds from certain side angles can also be noisy in some cars. Finally, check your tire pressures as this can affect things. After I picked up my ID4, I found the tire pressure was 50 to 52 psi in all 4 tires. The dealer had never reset them to the correct 42 psi during their post-shipping preparations for delivery.

 

This noise is on all roads. I drove 2000miles recently and its there everytime, i just cant take It. My kids can say and feel it. I am too sensitive and it bothers me. Tire pressure are near normal. Is it 20inch wheels. Hope not. Lets see what Vw ticket comes up with. I have two id4s reserved for my family. I will cancel if vw says it normal

 

I had the same issue, as the speed approached 90 on a smooth road, with no traffic through the twisty parts of I5 through Shasta. I identified the fault as my wife screaming about slowing down. I have been unable to reset it, and it now starts tutting at any speed above 56. Dealer has been unable to help, as apparently, she is now out of warranty. May need to take her to carmax.

Back on topic, I have never heard any such noise in my ID4 at any speed, other than some really rough grooved freeways. Those were not the ID4's fault, and having recently traveled these same miles in a couple of Ubers (both low to mid-range Japanese/Korean cars), I appreciate the ride quality and noise-free cabin of the ID4 even more.

It's possible your wheels are balanced, but a tire is slightly out of round with high RFV. (Road force variation) If they can't locate a source of the noise and you think it might be tires, have the dealer road force balance all four tires and give you the resulting figures. For example, if three tires are 10lbs of RFV (Very good) and one is 27lbs (poor), that one tire is to blame even if it is perfectly balanced. It can cause the feeling of imbalance and additional road noise.

New defective tires are unlikely but not unheard of. I've had plenty. I've found that Michelin tires are about the only brand that are immune to it. "If you want a round tire, buy a Michelin"

Another idea is ask your dealer for a test drive in another ID.4 so you can compare the sound.

 

I have a five week old Pro with 19” wheels and I get a humming sound above 60 mph and it is very exaggerated at 62mph and 67mph on all road surfaces. The tech at my dealership said it’s the tires and my wheel alignment was off 2° from the factory. I disagree with the tires and think it maybe in the electronics under the hood. ???

Is it still present when you are coasting in N? Rotating the top away from you toggles between D and B. But if you rotate it towards you it gets into N, so you are floating along in N.

 

I also have a "noise" in my car (1st non-max). In my case I can hear it up to 60-70km/h. It sounds like someone blowing on a bottle. I have taken it to the dealer and they cant (wont?) hear anything, but they allowed me to test various other ID4s. They all had the same noise, even the ones with smaller battery.

But, here is the weird thing. My wife and others say they can hear it, barely, and they would never have noticed it unless I mentioned it. But to me, it's really loud.

Things I have tried:

• Running on winter tires on the rear wheels (had a flat).
• Filming under the hood while driving (cant hear the sound there)
• Driving on different road type, from gravel to new pavement
• Opening windows
• Driving with or without the boot cover and driving with a lot of luggage

According to a Norwegian news article, other ID4 drivers (and other EV owners) have complained about a noise. In some cases it can be attributed to the infotainment.

I have learned to live with it, since it doesn't bother anyone else, but as I told my dealer, if I had tested the car before buying it I would never have bought it. And I know of at least one other Norwegian that have refused to buy the ID4 due to this noise.

 

Blowing on a bottle is exactly the noise. I now have the noise at 40, 50, 60 and 70 mph. Wheel Bearings????

 

You didn't mention having crossbars for your roof rack. If you do have the crossbars, this might possible explain the "roaring" noise you're getting at 58mph. Those VW stock crossbars have a tendency to vibrate/resonate at certain speeds. Mine did, so I added roof rack pads and that stopped my "roaring" sound.

If you have added the rack bars, they do increase the noise exponentially (with the car being so quiet normally. The noise increased when suggested Mrs JonGarUSA ride on them.....

 

No rack bars. Just the stock Pro with the stock 19” wheels.

 

Mine sounds like the driver window is open a bit at freeway speeds. I haven’t had the dealer look at it yet. FE with 20” tires.

 

I hear this...sometimes. But sometimes it's nice and quiet. Very "interesting" car.

I will need the picture of front plastic shield where it meets on each side to the battery pack and also on the rear plastic shield.... look at every hole and make sure there is dimple on one side...also i will need the pictures of the lower arm suspension that has aerodynamic plastics attached to it on the rear end of the car.
First picture is very suspicious on the plastic shield.

 

I don't have my ID4 Mule with me now but will post the pictures of properly installed plastic pieces in front of battery pack and after...and also lower suspension arm aerodynamic plastic pieces.

It may not be end of noise you experience but that is not property attached aerodynamic shield in front of the battery pack.

 

 

Take look at my picture.... you will see that your plastic shield is not aligned right.

They tried everything to fix it. Taking off the aerodynamic shield and reattaching it correctly( it was attached incorrectly at the factory) different brands of tires, covering the holes on the battery cover and covering openingon the front of the vehicle.

They tested 3 other ID4’s and 2 of them were silent (both Pro S)and on older FE with a few thousand miles sounded like mine at about 58mph. My Pro has about 5,000 miles on it.

Bottom line they have no idea how to solve this problem and fix the noise. HELP!

This type of problem requires sophisticated instruments to check resonance and noise coming at various places.
So what they need is to call for engineer with appropriate tools to come over and take care of this issue. With this they can pinpoint down to one foot square area.
This type of instruments are not easily available to service shops but engineering department will have access to this.
Where exactly is noise coming from...did they tell you anything.....by now they should have specific areas to do more testing.
To eliminate drive train noise they could lift car on the lift and test.
Don't give up and open ticket with VW customer service support and ask service advisor to ask help from engineering department. So they can send someone who is familiar and trained to use special tools.
If resonance coming from power train is resonating and creating humming noise they should install microphones at various places on the propulsion unit and motor inverter...and keep recording and narrow down point of resonance or humming noise.

 

This post is long overdue. I finally got my ID4 back last week after being at the dealership for 5 weeks. A team of engineers and QA managers from VW were at the dealership to look into why my ID4 makes a loud humming noise around 65 mph. Long story short; YES they hear the loud noise and they have no idea why the car makes this loud noise. They tested other ID4's and some make the noise and some do not make the noise. They had my car apart looking at mechanical and electrical operations of the vehicle and they found nothing. While at the dealer the car was also looked at for the interior overhead lights not turning on when opening the door, long story short; no fix and was told it would never be fixed "it's in the design of the car". The team also looked into the driver informant screen flickering yellow and long story short, no fix unless they see it happen to them and then maybe still no fix. VW is not willing to talk about a buy back.

 

Time for making pressure....another new car or pay out....have all documents what they did if they refuse ....using lawyer they will have no choice but provide information... 5 weeks is enough time to fix or give you another option.... don't let it get fly.

 

There where some issues related to side mirrors...try to look for noise coming from this area

 

After about 5,000 quiet miles on my ID4 Pro, I started hearing a humming noise at 63 and 71mph. I took it to the dealer, but they could not figure it out. Finally, I took a few pictures from the undercarriage of the car and found that at least 2 screws (that hold the undercarriage in place) were missing on the passenger side. The dealer put new screws back in and since then the noise has been a lot quieter. If I pay attention, I can still hear it, but it's almost all gone.
