For me I am torn whether or not the below two are my #1 complaints - probably about the same but I might be able to resolve the infotainment startup lag one.

1). Initial infotainment startup lag. I am going to try to turn off voice recognition and remove the nav from my favorites tiles today (3.1 upgrade plopped nav back in my startup tiles) and see if that helps.

2) Touch capacitive window panel buttons and headlight/defrost panel. I'm good with the infotainment sliders and I actually learned I like the ID.4 steering wheel controls after having a Tiguan loaner with physical buttons. I do agree that they got the volume up/down mixed up with the track up/down but I have gotten used to it once I figured out down is next track and up is last track.

Agreed, its a known issue... agreed its a problem, but even in the winter I keep the Pano open when its dry out on the Alltrack and Sportwagen. It's a must for me, even with the hassle of clearing the drain lines.

I did nothing with my class action suit letter when it arrived.... Just tossed the unresponded claim in with my other paperwork folder on the vehicle. I don't argue against anyone that feels like they need to be compensated for the trouble but I would replace my sunroof if needed.
Oh it can get real bad if it leaks and you don't catch it in time. My dealership billed VW nearly $4k for the CPO repairs on my 2012 Sportwagen (they had me sign the warranty copy to submit to VW so I saw the total). Spare tire well was dry one month then a month later it was a bathtub and my rear floorboards were soaked, there was no obvious indication within the car that the drains were leaking/overflowing and I don't make it a habit to check the rear floorboards for moisture. My repairs required all new carpet and padding front to rear, new headliner, new roof seals and all the related labor - took them a month to get everything done as there was a lengthy wait for either the carpet or headliner.

This is an easy question. The biggest problem on the ID.4 platform today is the lack of over-the-air software and firmware updates for North America. There are other issues, but they would be addressed through OTA updates. I find it particularly galling that VW has devoted a page on their site to the importance of over-the-air updates but has for THREE YEARS failed to deliver on them. I am surprised that they're hasn't been a class action suit.

Don't mean to get back on topic, but...

Overall I really like the car. As others have said, the software stuff is pretty frustrating. Every bit as bad, if not worse, is VW's inability to address, or in large part, even acknowledge the software problems and express a concerted interest in fixing them. Making the 2.1 folks wait a couple of years for updated, still buggy software is just plain poor. My car started with 3.1. Just running a few errands today, the infotainment had a suddenly light background (even when the setting was still on 'dark') and I later got the incessant "new settings available" message. I've quit bothering trying to change most of the settings since they re-set so often. I did see an article today that they're bringing in someone from Tesla and Rivian to head up new software development, but I suspect any big changes will be years away and only geared toward the next-gen cars.

This is my first VW. I've generally liked VWs over the years and was excited to own one. But so far, VW has done nothing to build any brand loyalty for me.
I agree. In general the car runs well but the intermittent glitches with the passenger seat, the windshield wipers and the voice activation is very annoying and stops me from loving the car enough to recommend buying a VW electric to others.

I don't know how your EA station is configured, but most EA stations have the charger at the end of parking space, not alongside it. So, you have to back into the spot, which, as I said, is not easy if you are carrying bikes on back. Then, I have to either walk out into traffic (most early stations were at Walmarts near the main driving entrance) or walk around the charger itself since there isn't room between the charger and the car with bikes. Even without bikes, you have to somehow get past the charging cable (go over or under) to get to the port to disconnect.

The car might "start right up" after pressing the brake, but my phone takes a minute or so to reconnect and Waze can take several minutes to reboot on the infotainment screen and resume my route. Meanwhile, if I'm in an unfamiliar area, I have to wait to see how to get out of the convoluted place that the charger is in to get back onto my route.

There is another problem with the car turning off when you get out. It used to be that the phone tap to charge feature on EA almost never worked, so you had to open the app, find the charger and swipe to initiate. Problem was that many remote charging stations had no cell coverage for my phone, so I was stuck. In the Bolt, I keep the car on and use the OnStar wireless hotspot to maintain connection. The OnStar wireless was on a different network than my phone so if my phone didn't have data service, my hot spot usually did. I had the VW car net at first, thinking I would have the same redundancy. But if the car turns off when you get out, you lose the VW car net connection, thus cancelling any redundancy you might have. You could dig out and throw the key back in the car and reach around to turn the car on with the button as long as you don't lean on the seat in the process or it will turn off again. However, that is a total PITA. That's why I ditched car net.

I do usually put the phone in the induction charger but it tends to overheat the phone without really giving it much charge. But the point is that I need my front pocket for my phone once I get out of the car so I can't be storing my wallet in there. I can't store my wallet and phone in the same pocket because the RF signal from the phone will scramble the magnetic strip on the card and I can't rely on having a working chip reader or tap everywhere I might want to buy something. In the Bolt on long distance trips, I did put my wallet in my front pocket (or the convenient pocket under the steering wheel) and the cell phone in the center console deck.

I actually wish that the ID.4 just was designed to be a vehicle to get you from A to B using the tried and true features that have been on ICE cars for decades. I don't want the car to decide when to start or stop running. I don't want 3 separate screens with obtuse functions for climate control. I don't want the car to slam on the brakes every time I try to back up with bikes on the back. VW tried to be too clever by half and include features (aka bugs) that nobody asked for and very few want.
I agree the charge port is in a bad place. Having to back into a charging spot in oven busy stations is a recipe for accidents, especially when you have to go past the spot to back in and someone is right behind you.

The one time I tried the auto parking feature, it backed me into the spot. Maybe it's a European thing about parking that way? Does anyone actually use the auto parking? It seems like a waste of engineering to build that instead of all the other issues.

Auto parking isn’t really something they built… it’s something they bought from a vendor (Bosch, maybe?). It’s in my Golf, albeit I control it with the steering wheel controls… and it has three options for me to choose from: parallel, perpendicular head in, and perpendicular back in. I use the arrow keys on the wheel to pick a mode. On the ID.4 you just control it with the touch screen.

For me personally my biggest is the lack of auto-lock on walking away from the vehicle. It's relatively small but its a "quality of life" thing for me since my wife's car has it and whenever she drives my car i need to remind her to lock it (she's better at it now")

Other one is
1. lack of OTAs - this would have helped "fixed" a lot of the issues most people have eg lack of preconditioning (if the hardward to support is available which from some comments i think it is); window bugs, having to confirm user each time, etc. This may change with the 2024s but it looks like if you're buying the car you're pretty much stuck with the software version you have which is a bit of a bummer (with a few exceptions)

2. My ambient light settings keep on getting reset to white every time. I no longer bother with changing them anymore since i don't drive a lot at night but will likely have to do so later in the year as we have shorter days and my daughter loves the lights.

In general I am not into the class action suit thing; however, this is one case where I would join one. It is maddening to see my wife’s MachE get continual updates (like pre-conditioning recently) and just praying that one day I might see any update at all.

I forgot to add my other beef with the car. The location of the charging port. It means I always have to walk all the way around the car to get to or from the charge port from the driver's seat.

On the MEB platform, the charge port location is optimized by placing it close to the HVB due to its RWD configuration. This reduces the weight, length, and resistance of the charging cable. Placing the charging port on the right-side front fender would result in a heavier, longer cable with higher resistance. The current location of the charging port is ideal for the platform's configuration.

Well, it's a credit card, not a key card. Not a good idea to leave it in the car. Besides, no good place to put it. My Bolt has a nice pocket under the steering wheel where I can stow a wallet (or my separate wallet for all my separate charging RFID cards) during a long trip. I still would have to unbuckle my belt to fetch the wallet from the front pocket. Meanwhile my two front pockets are already occupied with 1.) cell phone and 2.) key fob and house and mail box keys so I don't sit on them and butt dial or set off the car alarm.

I think that the aux. climate is supposed to stay on, but it doesn't. It shuts off as soon as I walk away. Nothing seems to work consistently in the car.

I forgot to add my other beef with the car. The location of the charging port. It means I always have to walk all the way around the car to get to or from the charge port from the driver's seat. And, it means I have to back into the charging spot which is really hard given the poor visibility out the back window. If I have bikes on back, which I usually do on a long trip, the rear camera view is blocked. Then I have to pull up so close to the charger that the bikes are literally touching the charger in order for the cables to reach. Some people say it's safer to back in. That's not strictly true. You are more likely to hit another parked car backing in. It's only true that pulling out forward is safer than backing out and the consequences of that are more severe. The port on my Bolt is on the front panel of the driver side - easy to get to, allows you to park straight in. Just a much easier experience.

Despite all my complaints (I worked as an engineer, so I always want to fix things), I do like the car. I don't love it, but I do like it.
Well said. I also like the car but really love(d) my Honda element and the fiat 500e.

I can’t help but wonder whether we’re not the target audience since we already paid for our cars.

I hope they have a healthy track record going forward of supporting “older “cars.

One of the reasons we bought the ID for was for the technology, and that is definitely not been anywhere near the promise.

Well, my Golf has a 3G modem that no longer connects since AT&T sunset their 3G network. When I put my VIN number into VW’s 3G sunset site, it says a free modem upgrade will be available to me, and I’ll receive a letter directing me to contact my dealer when it is available, sometime in early 2023…

good for you, let us know when you actually get it. also with our anemic id4 app we actually would not need any networking capability, a smoke signal would just do very fine.

all i can say is that i have with 3.1 upgrade more screen freezes, reboots and resets as before. i assume for me the main fix is supposed to be the potential engine shutdown which i only can hope WAS fixed.
listening to tesla users they also had their quibbles with software but the quicker response and OTA made these things less of a pain.

still i am wondering to have no 'always on' odometer reading and trip meter is just plain ridiculous i find. there are mainly 3 things i would consider regarding software:
1. does the specific feature work reliably (bug free)
2. do we have the necessary features to allow optimal use of the car
3. is the GUI state of the art and allows to make convenient and intuitive use of the available features

sadly for ID4 i have to say absolutely NO to all 3.

I suspect you’ve got a bad module in there… I’ve never had any screen freezes, reboots, etc… Six months since v3.1 and the new 12v battery. We had one issue with a bunch of random errrors when the car was a year old, with the original battery, but the 12v battery was low and a session with my Schumacher battery tender fixed it. We got a comms error after enabling the free safe & secure plan, so they did replace a bad J949 module before completing the update. Since the update, however, no issues… and many fewer error codes in OBDeleven scan. Take it in and have it checked out…

For those that have overall enjoyed owning their ID.4s, is there anything that you'd consider a stand out complaint to your car? Is it something small or is it a big deal you wished was taken care of? This can extend to the ID.3 as well for any European members.
We started the buy process back in January of 2022, when the ID4 was still built in Germany. Finally got it in October. Never got to drive one before buying, which I hated. Just sit in one, but never noticed some things that I grew to dislike. I did alot of research before buying, but there some things that was not listed in the item on the car. Such as: no glasses holder, no programable garage door opener, the car looses my seat sittings every time, the infotainment is slower than anything, it also pops up while a conversation is going on with another passenger, the bolsters on the seats are too high, and I am normal weight and size, inner action with voice commands are slow and stupid. I am would seriously sell it if my wife did not like so much. Any comments or thoughts?

Possibly, but what is the chance for the dealer to figure that one out? I will mention it on Monday to them. Recall door latch fix.
