What's your #1 ID.4 Complaint?

For those that have overall enjoyed owning their ID.4s, is there anything that you'd consider a stand out complaint to your car? Is it something small or is it a big deal you wished was taken care of? This can extend to the ID.3 as well for any European members.

I can totally relate to the frustration with the ID.4's quirks! My top complaint is also about the system's limitations – I'd love to have a way to permanently disable the Maneuver Braking feature like what was mentioned. It's just too sensitive, especially when I'm trying to back out of tight spaces with bikes on the hitch. It’d be great if there was a simple fix without having to resort to workarounds. Anyone else dealt with this?

My biggest complaint is that the voice command feature is so limited.

With everything in the car controlled by computer, you should be able to control everything in the car by voice command. There are plenty of examples (limited control of Clima, inability to roll down the windows, or honk the horn) but my main one is that if I suddenly enter a situation where I want the bad weather lights* to go on, that is exactly a situation where I don't want to be fumbling around trying to figure out the headlight control panel.

Unless there is a pretty substantial improvement to this feature within the next year, I'm planning to discontinue the Plus Speech subscription because as it stands, it's practically useless.

* Related complaint is the lack of European lighting, including actual fog lamps front and rear, and adaptive headlights.

Wow... I didn't even realize it was a subscription... it hardly does anything on the few occasions where it works. I think the remote access subscription is the only one remotely worth subscribing to, and even then, one would hope that it would do more than the less-than-minimum that it does now.

I'll give VW credit for giving us CarPlay with no subscription though.

My car has been great but my number one complaint is the stupid welcome message that appeared ever since the software upgrade to 3.X . I drove for almost 3 years on the first generation of the software with zero issues and quite frankly the software updates haven't really brought anything useful besides having the battery % now being shown. But that welcome message, that drives me bonkers. It adds nothing beneficial and always having to touch the screen to make it go away is annoying.

Every week I start off with a clean, no fingerprints screen, and resolve to not touch it except for that login acknowledgement. I sometimes make it to Wednesday.

I have figured out most of the car's voice-controllable features. I think. Now the biggest problem is trying to control CarPlay by Siri; there is not enough capability. Maybe the new iOS update (18) will help, especially after they release the AI software in a couple of months. :ROFLMAO:

Mine are mostly "1st world problems", and nothing so far that really interferes with safe driving.

1. The radio coming on randomly. Sometimes when I put it in reverse. Sometimes when the car starts beeping at me for being too close to something. Sometimes when I just get in. (I'm mostly used to the climate coming on every time)

2. The 2-switch window control (and, less-so, the steering wheel controls).

3. The inability of the app to reliably start climate control remotely (and the lack of features in the app generally).

4. Concern about the cost of maintaining the vehicle when it's out of warranty (but this is a worry for any modern car).

#2 I'm hoping that our very own Wes and Jan will fix for me :)

All this being said, I do enjoy driving the car and smile every time I mash on the accelerator. I've driven some other EVs and also think the UI/UX (other than the over reliance on touch controls) fits my style more than most.

Number 3 is the big one for me. Because winter is coming.

We have about 7K miles on our 2024 Pro S AWD.

Everything about the car has been operating properly. So far, no weird behavior or error codes.

But,

I wish we could have found a similar Pro S RWD model instead ( $4K less, no need for a hitch or electrically heated windshield and would have been about an inch lower, longer range and almost as quick as the AWD).

It would have been nice to have a spare tire.

It's so damned heavy, like any other EV.

It would have been great if the sunroof was optional rather than standard on the Pro S.

After dealing with a foggy windshield a couple of times, I really wish I had a heated windshield, despite the problems with cracks. Really frustrating in conditions where you don't want to heat or cool the cabin. (Turn on max defrost. Turn off max defrost to avoid the windshield and cabin from getting too cold. Go into climate control and turn off AC because you never wanted it on, but max defrost turns it on and doesn't turn it back off. Repeat every few miles.)

Related, my biggest complaint is a lack of a on/off control for heating. Just a temperature control is no where near good enough.

Our '23 AWD Pro is our favorite car since our 1988 VW Quantum. A steep learning curve, to be sure, but no problems beyond an occasional minor software irritant and those annoying door-handle recalls.

Our #1 beef is VW's myopic management and its suspect corporate values that first showed up with Dieselgate. Our lease is up in February and, while it's possible we might renew for a year to see what else is coming down the EV pike--not much until 2027, it appears--it's just as likely we'll look elsewhere. We love our local(ish) VW dealer, but VW itself seems far less customer-forward these days than when it first won American hearts with the Beetle and the Bus and the Rabbit.

Since you love the car, we would hate to see you leave VW. I also love my local dealer which can be worht more than the brand itself. It is also a tough call to what the latest and greatest new EV models for any brand. With my 2023 ID.4 and 2021 Kona EV before that, I jumped into the 3rd year out and avoided some glitches. If you can wait for an ID.4 that comes with NACS, that might be a consideration.

My wife reminded me yesterday of her beef: the seats don't go high enough. She's not even short, at 5'6", but with the seat adjusted comfortably it is way too low. I'm about 5'10" and have to put them all the way to the highest position in order to feel like I'm looking out the windshield properly. Another several inches, like 10 cm, of height would be appropriate.

I think you have to see what is actually available when your lease ends. For example, I had been expecting to choose between another ID. 4, an ID. 7, or an ID. Buzz when my 2022 lease expired. But there was a stop sale on the Buzz and the genius executives at Volkswagen of America had cancelled the ID. 7. Oops!

So by 2027 there could be a choice between a revamped ID. 4, or ID. Golf, or ID. Buzz, or ID. 7, or ??? Not to mention a bunch of stuff from other vendors that might or might not be available. Nobody knows.

Right. But my lease ends in February 2026, and the more interesting replacements don't begin to materialize--if they ever do--until the 2027 models become test-drivable in the fall of 26. Hence the conundrum: Extend the ID.4 lease for a year come February? See if we connect with the updated Subaru Solterra or the new Unhinged Uncharted? Or whiff dinosaur vapors with the trusty 20-year-old old Tacoma for a year-ish.

First-world problems, of course.

Although I’ve never leased a car, at this stage of EVs, I think that’s the way I would go for the next one if I were you. Depreciation will probably still be a problem. Despite an 8 year battery warranty, the drivetrain warranty is typically still only the bumper to bumper, typically 48 months/50,000 miles. AFAIK, only Tesla covers the motors/inverters as part of the battery warranty and now has a 7 year/unlimited mileage warranty on expensive things like axle half shafts, AC charger, etc. For alternatives, a 3 year lease with option to renew for a year makes the most sense for an EV if you won’t exceed the mileage. IMO and YMMV.

Even if the new Subaru Trailseeker for example came out by your February deadline, and even if planning to lease, I’d still want to spend up to a year on its forum seeing what early adopters are experiencing. For that reason, and since it would still be covered by the bumper to bumper warranty, I’d probably extend the lease on the ID.4 for a year, which will keep those miles off the Tacoma and extend its life. Consider that may put you in the situation of replacing the tires before turning it in.

I don’t expect VW to have an SSP replacement for the ID.4 until 2029 and again, I’d want to see how it goes with early adopters. And sadly, I don’t expect VW’s support to get any better but would hope to be wrong.

The CEO of Recurrent provides some useful context about depreciation starting at about 33:20 here:

(There’s a good general discussion about the EV market before that as well.)

My biggest complaint is the charging lock. I owned a Nissan Leaf before the ID.4. With the Leaf, if you needed the car when it was charging, you simply squeezed the charging handle and pulled it out. The ID.4 locks it in so you cannot release it, which is totally unnecessary for garage kept cars. The display doesn't always show the Cancel Charge button and even when it does show the button sometimes it does not unlock the charging handle. I have only owned the ID.4 for a little over a month and have used the emergency release in the trunk 3 times already. Volkswagen support is almost useless, they only tell you to take it to the dealer. I Don't want to waste my time or the dealers time because it only fails sometimes.

My major complaints are already listed (multiple times). I don’t think I saw the following minor complaint: Audio control buttons are on the left side of the steering wheel and counter intuitive. For some crazy reason, the volume arrow are left and right, while the track/station change arrows are up and down (up for previous track/station, down for the next). Our other car (and every other car I’ve owned that has audio controls on the steering wheel) has track selection left and right and volume control up and down.

#377 ·
That's been mentioned many times but in the context of earlier ID.4s where the audio controls were on the Right side of the Steering Wheel.

In two years of driving my ID.4, I never did adapt to that loony setup. Part of the reason one can't adapt (well, I couldn't adapt) is that on the touchscreen, some of the channel-changing menus are left and right.
