Europe getting OTA update?

An interesting post on Reddit that would appear to be an OTA update. Any European ID.4 drivers get the same?

Europe has had OTA 2.1 -> 2.3, then 2.4 in-shop, and a few waves of 2.4 -> 3.0. Currently everyone is expecting more information on how it's to proceed, as the 3.0 OTA was halted a few months back.

There are unverified rumours that it would in-shop straight to 3.2 instead of the OTA 3.0 (currently you can get 2.4 -> 3.0 in-shop if you know what to say, there's a TPI to refer to and certain issues to complain about), but no official word. Volkswagen has stated (in the ID Drivers Club they run) that they are collecting info on how to proceed by the end of April and will inform the Club after, so everyone is expecting additional info Soon(tm).

That specific thing you are referring to is a tiny 3.0.x update that calibrates the motor, and it's mandatory for all "updated to 3.0 OTA or in-shop" cars. It's not an update of the ID software. Sure, it's OTA, but so are map updates. I don't think anyone refers to those when they complain about/wish for/ask for OTA updates.

english version - Birect will be "usable" from the app. You still need atleast 3.5 for that which rolls NOW from the factory. but still dc-dc chargers are expensive

That's great - I'll report back if my UK vehicle has 3.5 installed from the factory.
It's the charging mode which is a bit odd, not sure I quite understand the difference between the two.

Not yet, but we are in the midst of a 3.1 upgrade and that seems to have them pretty busy.

I would wait until May 2nd to see what they have in mind for Europe for a 3.2 upgrade (OTA or dealer, etc, etc). And nobody in Europe ever got 3.1 unless it came from the factory with that version.

Yeah, I don't know. Was posting what the user posted at Reddit. I did mention that he has an appointment to do so. If 3.2 does roll out in the US, would be nice to be OTA.

Edit: I posted your link over there to get a response. Considering that the user posted 9V battery instead of 12V battery, he/she may not be very good with numbers lol! :p

Theoretically, if I could somehow get the ID4 to connect to Europe through a VPN, could I get my US spec car to download this update? I'm assuming that the software very well may brick my car or also be blocked by VIN number or any other issue. I'm not going to risk it on something so valuable. But still, i'm curious.

No. Updates are specific to a VIN and the car. Even after-market towing-hooks alone were enough of a difference to throw off the 2.4 update at the shop. Because the server didn't expect there to be that accessory. It needs to be your VIN, car and accessories.

Good luck to everyone with after-market speakers installed by a third party...

Your car will ask VW servers if there is an update-package specific to the car. If not, nothing happens.

I mean of being in the same network and continent would be sufficient, I wouldn't see daily complaints about not getting the 3.0 OTA in Europe.

Question and reply from VW UK (in same Reddit thread)...FWIW.

I have received the new 12 volt battery and the ID. software 2.4 update, how do I receive my update to ID. software 3.0?

After analysing the technical circumstances and the general feedback from our customers a decision has been made to carry out the update to ID. software 3.0 in the workshop. At the same time, your car will be updated to ID. software 3.2 to ensure you have the latest software available.

One would hope that eventually they will be able to deliver via OTA and not drag people in to the dealer. The announcement above doesn't say that upgrading from 3.0->3.2 would require a dealer visit, but it doesn't say that it does either. I suppose one interpretation is that they want to focus their resources on getting 2.x people upgraded first before they start getting people upgraded from 3.0/3.1. I suppose it is also possible that they haven't devoted the resources to validate OTA, and they don't want to commit to it until they are sure that they can deliver.

That being said, someone somewhere posted a list of modules that get updates at every 3.X release - for example, going from 3.1 to 3.2 does not involve anything like the massive update that we had to go from 2.1 to 3.1. So even if a dealer were involved, it is likely to be much less resource intensive. But my personal hope is that at some version, OTA will actually work reliably enough that they can just push things out that way.

From German forums:
Wouldn't it make sense though that the same deficiencies present in our '21s with respect to the 97ZZ drive system recall are present in the EU vehicles?

And we know that that defects aren't OTA fixable. We also know VW was still in the early stages of researching the problem at the time 2.4 landed last summer, so it's doubtful the fix was included in the 2.4 in-shop update.

Or am I missing some critical, obvious piece of logic here?

VW almost didn't raise ours to the level of recall (was talking about Service Action for resolution, instead). With lax EU vehicle oversight with respect to recalls, isn't it likely this is just a quiet fix over there?
