Kia’s EV train keeps charging forward, this time, with its latest compact crossover, the EV5. Thanks to the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the production version’s design and specs were accidentally revealed mid-August, earlier than expected. The official reveal is expected around August 25 at the Chengdu Motor Show; the new EV5 will be built in China and go on sale there first, but will be available in several global markets—with North America expected to be one of them.

The sharp-looking concept version of the EV5 (back half of the gallery below) was unveiled in March 2023, and it seems it’s barely strayed from that prototype, now, in its final form. The wheels are either 18 or 19 inches in diameter, but retain the same design as the 21-inch wheels stemming from the concept. Other slight changes include the inclusion of traditional side mirrors, aerodynamic door handles, a larger charging port, and minimally changed LED headlights.

Think of it as a smaller EV9, complete with the straight roofline, hard-edge body lines, and just enough boxiness to make the Volvo 240 Wagon warmly smile from the grave. Daytime running lights see a zig-zag pattern inspired by the Kia Niro’s; and the creases in the body will help it stand out for those steering away from smooth, often bland EV design lines. The rear shows off a snazzy light bar, and what we’d call a handlebar-moustache-inspired rear light assembly.

No interior images have been made available yet, but if it’s much different from the EV9, I’ll be thoroughly shocked.

Specs and dimensions also leaked by Chinese authorities – as reported by autohome.com – put the EV5 at a length of 4,615 mm (181.7 inches); a width of 1,875 mm (73.8 inches); and a height of 1,715 mm (67.5 inches), with a 2,750-mm (108.3 inches) wheelbase. In short, it’s the electric equivalent, size-wise, of the popular Kia Sportage.

Power specs have the EV5 running 215 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque through only the front wheels, although there’ll likely be an all-wheel-drive version out in the next couple of years, especially if it hits Canadian shores. The specs also reveal the top speed will be electronically capped at 185 km/h (115 mph) and that energy will be stored in BYD’s Blade lithium-iron-phosphate battery pack. No range details have come out yet, but based on size and what Kia’s done with the EV6, 400-ish km would be a safe presumption.

Manufactured in Yacheng, China as a joint venture between Kia and Yueda, it’s been created as a global EV, meaning it’s likely to reach North America, but that we don’t know when or for certain. If it does reach Canada, there’s likely a shuffle ahead for the Kia lineup, between the Niro and similarly-sized Sportage. Pure speculation says if the EV5 shows up, the Sportage will be driven away later this decade.

The Kia EV5 is set for its world debut on August 25 at the Chengdu Motor Show.

I just wanted to jump in and share my excitement about the Kia EV5! I’ve been a fan of Kia since owning a Kia Optima with the G4KJ Engine. That car had great performance and style, so it’s cool to see Kia pushing boundaries with their EV lineup. The EV5 looks sharp, and I love how they kept the concept's design almost intact. The EV5's specs sound promising, especially with the anticipated all-wheel-drive version. I’m curious about the interior, too—if it’s anything like the EV9, it’s bound to be stylish and comfortable. Can't wait to see how it competes with the Sportage!

I've just realized something. The EV5 is being built in China. That means it's facing that huge tariff for Canada now. I know they will be adding production to Korea but not sure when that starts.
