Hmm, I'm going to have to start playing with my EVSE then. The main issue Michael was having was his charger wasn't working. I experienced that a few times but only tried charging once.

It seems like your issue was not getting your charger to unlatch whereas ours was not getting it to latch in the first place (resulting in a lower charge rate or no charging at all).

Has anyone had a problem with the charging socket flap? (That's what it's called in the manual; I would call it the door that covers the charging socket.) Anyway, after charging the car today, I closed the flap in the usual way (gently) and noticed that the flap was ajar: it would not close tight but, worse, it would not open. I was worried that I could not charge the car at all if I couldn't get the flap opened, and I knew from Furkan's post that the flap can be fragile. While driving home, I looked in the side view mirror and saw that the flap had somehow freed itself and was hanging wide open. I pulled over and closed it and it looked like it was back to the proper alignment. Once home, I opened and closed the flap several times and found that the it now opens only intermittently -- you have to push it several times before it pops open. However, the closing operation is normal.

I have noticed that it’s much less fluid than a standard flap on an ICE car. It could have used some more heft - like the passenger doors. Might be good to mention over here: Mechanical issues

They have a Tiguan also, but said that I would be happier in the Jetta. What do you think? Should I switch it up? I have never driven a Tiguan before.
I traded my Tiguan for the ID4. I also have a Jetta still in the family. I'm 6'1 and would take the Tiguan without question. If given a Jetta I'd be asking "got anything else?"

I am getting the same problem

Has anyone found a remedy to this problem? I’d rather avoid a trip to the dealer.

I plug in the charger, it blinks green and red, and on the cockpit display it reads “Only emergency charging is currently available. Please see owner’s manual.” (The manual says “the charging connector is not fully locked”.)

After plugging it in, you can hear several clicking sounds coming from the port as it tries to initiate charging. Then it faults. It draws 1kW, no more. I’ve experienced this on my brand new ChargePoint Home Flex as well as a public Level 2 charging station. I haven’t tried a DC fast charger. I also don’t know how to do a “hard reset”. Holding down the on/off button for a long time doesn’t do anything.

I just got my ID4 over the weekend and I got the emergency only charging. My level 2 was only pushing like 4 amps more or less. With red green flashing lights. This happen after I added a schedule with 3 hours to leave. I would not think that would be an issue. But I unchecked all my schedules and preferred time for charging and all is back to normal.

I wonder if this little pin that blocks the plug latch lever could just be pushed in with a screwdriver if the plug won't release. Is the release cable doing anything more than mechanically pulling on the pin?

The new Jettas feel like you are driving an Audi and get 36.5 mpg at 80 mph. Plus they seem very big inside(many Germans are taller than 6’1” you know 😉). I just got through trading my newer mint condition Jetta away and kept my truck…before I decided the ID.4 was completely unaffordable and had to go.

I just dropped off the car at the dealer for service. Here’s a video showing what causes the fault: the pin doesn’t fully extend to lock the plug in place.
This video, or one like it that shows the pin and latch operating correctly, should be pinned on the mechanical problems page. Not understanding this minor consideration of how to insert the plug caused me a lot of frustration as a new owner.

It just happened to my ID.4. Alternate red-green light with “emergency only charging” notice and showing only 3 to 4 amps charging. I looked in the owner’s manual and saw the light pattern and the corresponding problem. One each of red and green means “source fault”. So what I did was I disconnected the charger from the car and unplugged the level 2 charger that I’m using. I plugged it in after about a minute and connected the charger to my car and it worked! I just needed to reset my charger.
Looking at the light pattern in the manual will really take out or lessen the guess work in diagnosing the charging problem.

I just picked up my MY2023 AWD Pro S and having the same exact problem that OP had.I had made a post with the green-red-green blinking and a lot of folks mentioned the positioning of the charge gun. I did that multiple times but no luck. I thought my EVSE (just self installed last night was the issue but I chatted with their CS and they said they see no issues) also took apart my plug connection as well. Fortunately one kind hearted fellow suggested going to other chargers to confirm its not a vehicle issue and voila! Still having the same issue at the neighborhood ChargePoint with the vehicle charging at only 1kW. I am currently at about 90 miles/37%-ish and hope this can get me to the dealership tomorrow.

UGH! My worst fears of a horrible start to my EV journey have come true

Hello All,
I have done some testing and was able to replicate the emergency charging fault. Here is what I have found with my 2022 ID4. It is possible to plug in the charger at the cars socket so that the locking pin engages before the plug was pushed all the way in. That causes the plug not to go all the way in. You can hear the locking pin engaging and it seems like its plugged in correctly (green light). Once the car starts charging it notices the bad connection at the plug and goes into emergency charging. If you have set a timer the car will not notice the bad connection until your timer has expired (that's what happened to me). I got to my car the next morning and it wasn't fully charged. Best practice for me now is to plug the car in and and I try to unplug it while locked. If I cant unplug it, it is plugged in correctly and charging works fine once the time has expired.

My experience with emergency charging is as follows. for context I have a 2023 vw id4 and a 240 volt 40 amp level 2 charger. In my case, it seems that while the vehicle is off, and you plug in the charger, it will work as advertised, supplying almost 40 amps. if i open the door and turn the car "on" ("accessory mode"), it will put the vehicle in emergency charging mode. this has happened several times and seems like this is the culprit. If i plug the charger in while the car is off and leave it alone it will charge fine at about 40 amps until its done.
