Thanks for posting about this. I have a new used VW ID.4 2022. Just noticed that my car was not even close to fully charged today after plugging in overnight. Then saw "Only emergency charging is currently available" on my screen when I tried to charge again. When I first got the car, I remember seeing lots of videos on the factory reset and wondering why you would need to do that? (smirk) After trying a couple of other things, I unplugged the charger, turned the car on, did a factory reset in the SETTINGS menu, plugged the charger in and voila, back to normal level 2 charging.

I have this problem but more complicated :) I have a charger at home. Wall. Everything works fine. I also charge my car at various other charging stations, both public and private. Always works. However, my mother in-law installed the exact same model of Wallbox charger at her place. My car won't charge there. It keeps trying to click the charger in place but it won't work and I get EMERGENCY CHARGING ONLY and it keeps flashing between red and green. The service guy came to check the charger at my mother in laws, plugged in his car to the charger --- AND IT WORKED without a problem. I tried my car again. Doesn't work. I went back another day. Doesn't work. It works fine everywhere except at my mother-in-laws!!!!!! So how does the service guy's car work? aaaagh!!!!

Has anyone found a remedy to this problem? I’d rather avoid a trip to the dealer.

I plug in the charger, it blinks green and red, and on the cockpit display it reads “Only emergency charging is currently available. Please see owner’s manual.” (The manual says “the charging connector is not fully locked”.)

After plugging it in, you can hear several clicking sounds coming from the port as it tries to initiate charging. Then it faults. It draws 1kW, no more. I’ve experienced this on my brand new ChargePoint Home Flex as well as a public Level 2 charging station. I haven’t tried a DC fast charger. I also don’t know how to do a “hard reset”. Holding down the on/off button for a long time doesn’t do anything.

Not sure if this is your problem but my car goes to emergency charging if you unlock a door, open a door, turn on "ignition". If you are doing any of these then don't. Shut the doors, leave the car locked or unlocked, plug the charger in and walk away.

The emergency charging / low charging rate issue happened many times when I first got the car. Reboot was needed to reset. I finally figured out what I was doing wrong. The charging cord was too short for me to push the charger in with some force (necessary to build resistance). Once we moved the charger closer to the car and I could plug it in with a little more force, I stopped having the problem.

I never had this problem until my new id.4 started acting up over the past month. Symptoms are pretty much as described: plug in, "Emergency charging active" message displays, get green-red flashing lights at charge port, pulls 4kW. I tried the many suggestions provided here, including lubricating the locking pin, cleaning out the port, and trying other chargers. What I've discovered is that it will not work any longer if I casually plug in the charging cable. I have to plug it in and "massage" the connection by applying a little pressure on the cable and gently moving it around to seat it. Assuming this ritual continues to work, it's not the end of the world. However, it surely sounds like there is a part(s) that is out of tolerance or what have you.

Has anyone had this problem and got it resolved by replacing one or more components? Thank you.

Yes I had this problem, and it was due to the port being too tight and required a really hard press to get it to fully seat. I solved it by lightly sanding the plug on my EVSE and then silicone spray on the plug so it goes in and out easier.

Thank you for sharing. The first time this happened to me was at a ChargePoint public L2 station. That isn't something I do often so what you suggest would make life easier at home but I'd still have to be mindful and hopeful of getting things to work when at a foreign L2.

para mi se ha solucionado solo empujando el cable bien adentro cuando lo pongo a cargar . cuando intenta bloquear el cable .
Thank you. Keeping steady pressure on the cable seems to make it work.

had the same issue with a brand new 2025 id4... the little actuator button at the top of the plug socket was stuck out, so i pushed it back in with a screwdriver and then the plug locked and is now charging. We will see if continues all night and if it does it again next time. for now it is working...

I have a 2 week old 2025 id4 pro with the same charging issue - Emergency charging only with green and red flashing light and does not lock in place. I pushed the little actuator button at the top of the plug in with a screwdriver and the plug locked and started charging. We will see if it holds or if it is a problem next time I charge...very frustrating, but an easy (if only temporary) fix.

The actuator for the Charge Port Door Lock is known to have its internal mechanisms corrode and jam, leaving people unable to open their Charge Port Doors and charge their cars; maybe the same phenomenon happens with the J1772 Locking Plunger Actuator? People have had trouble with the plunger not releasing their J1772 nozzles but that has seemed to be mechanical interference between the latch on the nozzle and the plunger; yours is the first report I recall reading about the plunger getting stuck out when there's no nozzle inserted in the Charge Port.

The port on my 2025 port is noticeably tighter fit than my 2022 was, using the same J1772 charging connector
