For openers, I am not interested in finding some way to cruise down the interstate with my hands off the steering wheel. The issue I am having however is that I just happen to have a light touch on the steering wheel in any car, but on the ID4 with the lane control/assist activated, its constantly nagging me to keep my hands on the wheel when in fact, they are. To satisfy the computer, I have to grip the wheel harder than I am used to do and I find it uncomfortable on a long drive. Was wondering if there were any techniques to lessen the impact. I wonder for example if I turn the lane control thing off would it still nag me. I have read that tesla drivers have been known to put weights or grips on the wheel to actually defeat the nag and go full auto pilot, and, as indicated, I have no interest in that all. Was wonderng if any ID4 drivers have found safe and reasonable way of lessening the nag from the car. Thanks all.

Do you know what software version you're on? It may be my imagination but this seems to happen less often after I updated to 3.1. Still happens sometime though, it will tell me to take over steering when I already have both hands on the wheel.

Which reminds me, winter is coming, I need to find some capacitive-friendly gloves.

I just lay my hand on the bottom of the wheel with my arm on the arm rest … but your 23 sadly lacks the cool arm rests of our German built cars. ;) I do find that it can’t sense my hand as well if it’s near a spoke in the wheel, so move it away from any of the spokes …. But I never need to grip the wheel, just rest it on the inside of the bottom and gravity holds it there.

Having flunked my first driving test around 53yrs ago, Town I learned to drive in didn’t have stop lights, and spent most of my formative years driving on back roads in the mountains etc.
Thing is I’ve never felt like I needed lane assist etc. So after my first encounter with L/A I tried to disable it, only to find it reenabled upon entering and booting up every time, bought an OBD11 to enter it to memory mode, after 3.1 update that was a moot point, It’s there if I need, but having put 27,000 miles on since 7/22, quite happy with not using it, and don’t plan on using anytime soon.

To each their own.

I think I found my solution, just turn travel assist off. First time I encountered this was in a rental car, it took me by surprise and I didn't like it. Recall having a verbal argument with the car, oh you think you can drive better than me, fine go ahead...and then it would alarm my hands were not on the wheel. In the id4 I find with the assist off it still keeps track of lane position on the cockpit display but doesn't complain about my light touch. I do find the assist useful at times but its nice to be able to switch on and off.

An update to this thread, I made an accidental discovery and a better solution. The issue I had with the ID throwing warning messages and redlights and shaking because of my light touch on the steering wheel while operating with travel assist on was because I often drive with one hand hooked with one or two fingers on the steering wheel in either the 5 or 7 oclock position. To stop the warnings I have to maintain some pressure , which for me, becomes uncomfortable after awhile with the two fingers I have had touching the wheel. Somtimes I have to grab the wheel with both hands when it gets really annoyed with me. (One time I think I aggravated it so much it flashed a message it was turning off travel assist whether I liked it or not [it reset next day]),

What I accidentally discovered is that while it hates me driving with just one or two fingers hooked on the wheel, its good with three. I rest the three fingers on either hand next to my thumb on the wheel, either 5 or 7 oclock position, just resting, no additional pressure, and travel assist does it thing with no warnings or alarms.

Dont know if this works for everybody but thought I would pass it along.

I'm new to this tech, but I did notice if i lightly grip the front and rear of the wheel with my thumb and finger at 5 o'clock, it also works. I am typically a 9 and 3 kind of guy, and that also works, but feels strange when my mind wants to turn at a certain point, and the car doesn't (or the opposite). I like it so far though.
