You cannot lock your keys inside the car, it won't lock, I just tested it on mine.
Well I just proved you wrong. Locked my Alltrack today with keys in car. I had my keys in my work bag. I got out of my car, locked drivers door, opened trunk to grab shopping bags. Tossed my work bag in trunk, slammed trunk door shut. Beep! Locked. Husband had to come rescue me with spare key. He’s dumbfounded. He said it was impossible. Took 6 years but I just proved him wrong.

Damn straight I did. Bc I want all of you experts to know (including my awesome electrical engineer husband) that it can be done. I scanned everyone else’s issues. There have been times where one of us had a key outside the car while other key was inside; couldn’t lock the car. Yet one moment of mental relapse while hubby is 30 miles away…yeah. He’s trying to lecture me about the amount of metal in the back seat, blah blah. Nope. He told me it was impossible. Challenge accepted. Took me 6 years. Now my question for you: who has time to post 7866 posts since 2021? Dang is right.

Me. I do. I have that luxury. Make it 7867. About ID.4 stuff. On an ID.4 forum. (You know... not an Alltrack.)

Anywho, welcome to the forum, I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot of participation from you.

I managed to lock myself out of the boot (ID3) I shut the boot with my coat inside, I thought I’d got the ID key in my trouser pocket, but it was my Golf key…. The car bipped 3 times when I shut the boot, I was in a rush and thought it just hadn’t shut properly, so gave it a good slam ..twice…it let me open it. I walked away, then realised I’d left my glasses in the car so went back - maybe 1 minute later..boot wouldn’t open…doors wouldn’t open- got the key out of my pocket and then realised it was the golf key not the id3 Key ……….d’oh. VW came out and were awesome. The recovery guy said he didn’t have a pick for the lock, but they do exist….. Could jack the door open but would likely damage, so ended up going home to get the spare key ~25 mile round trip. Like I said they were very helpful ! The app doesn’t appear to have an unlock facility on it

I can’t remember ever not getting my key/fob from the cashier after I paid. Even with zero balance warranty work, that’s where it was… with the service ticket.
~50/50 proposition for me since such fobs came into existence (Audi/VW/Benz). Understandably when they drive the vehicle back from the service bay they either leave the key in the vehicle or bring it to the service advisor. If it's been left in the vehicle the SA usually cites same, but I've had to ask on a few occasions. And immediately back in my pocket it goes. ;)

Dang @Mctiff , did you really just join an EV forum to spite-reply to a 1½ year old comment that you locked your keys in your ICE car?

I mean, not saying it can't be done in an ID.4 also, but... Dang.
Umm, I am just joining now to reply to you, I don’t think the person joined for an old spite reply, they probably landed here (like I have now) trying to understand why they got locked out. I am here to wondering why the VW locked my keys in the boot, my house keys were with them, but at least I still had my phone else I would have been really stuck and very, very late to work. Very frustrating, as I don’t think this should have been possible, it must be a design flaw , so I am responding to you out of frustration years after your post. To other locked out VW drivers, it happens and it is horrible and I have no idea what to do about, it is frightening that it could happen again by accident

It was the tone of McTiff's post I was responding to. Context is king. It was an admittedly petty response on my part to an equally petty post.

@SunWizard 's post was correct in that if Kessy detects a key, it will not lock. But these systems are not foolproof. If the signal is blocked, or if the key is left dormant and "falls asleep" (not a feature in all VW products, but apparently so in the ID.4) then the car can't know the key is present and will lock normally. So in more words, it's accurate to say that the system is designed to prevent this, but can't be relied upon.

The frustrating thing with the ID.4 is that we are unable to unlock our cars with our phones via the MyVW app. Other VW products allow this. It seems like a very basic feature to be missing, and VW has told us this was not an oversight and it won't be addressed in future updates, that our ID.4s are incapable of this.

It is good to see these threads , because regardless of whether a solution is found it is good to know that other people have experienced the issue.
I don’t know if the key was blocked, but effectively is was in the same place in my hand bag as where it was detected to allow me to open the boot, so it seems like it should have been detectable, but the interior detectors might have been blocked, I have no idea where they are located within the car

Oh YES, Absolutely! If the key is in a dead spot 100%
Happen to me. I forgot my key in the gym bag, open the trunk, closed it and that was the end of it!
What a F..g shit. VW does NOT GET IT to do even such a simple thing right!
Same here! I was going swimming, so I locked the doors, then realised the swimming pool didn't have lockers, so I thought - I'll put my handbag in the boot! Which I did and closed the boot! BIG MISTAKE!!! My phone, wallet and keys were all locked in the boot. Fortunately it was only a 3 km walk home in 30 degree het to get the spare key and another 3km walk back to the car! SO CROSS! Surely with an expensive car like VW, they should make this impossible to do!

They try to make this impossible by trying to detect when there's a fob left behind in the car.

Unfortunately, they can't detect the fob in all of the places where you might leave it so this bit of allegedly-helpful automation can fail you just at the moment you most need it.

My 2019 Volt tries to be similarly helpful. If you close the doors while there's still a fob detected in the car, it honks the horn three times loudly. So every time I leave the car with my wife still sitting in the car, the car yells at me because it detects the fob in her purse and it figures I've left a fob behind in the car.
