My dealer is saying the update could take 48 hours.
Lol, that's crazy. These dealers are so inconsistent. I'd bet what they are trying to communicate is that they'll keep the car for two days, just somebody there is getting a bit literal.

This is the part of me saying to just sit and wait for the OTA, that it'll be simpler if there is no human in the middle.

I just returned from getting 616A (software) and 5739 (door handles) on my car, one of the very last built 2021 model Pro S RWD (received March of 2022). Car seems... normal? Not sure what I was hoping for.

It has been a nightmare of unreliable transport, including twice locking up WHILE DRIVING and declaring some sort of battery meltdown. VW refused to buy it back, and my wife has refused to drive it much of the time. Will the software "upgrade" fix the car? My money is on no, but we will see.

Oh sorry forgot to add, the dealership said the software upgrade took six hours. I'm guessing we're back to the restricted pipe with German servers, and downloading a complete software image, not just hotfixes.
When I talked to the service advisor for my dealership, she talked about needing to download the whole thing before updating any cars, which would take close to a day or so. In my mind, I sort of think of it kind of like a local mirror - and it would be a somewhat logical thing to have dealers set things up like that just so they don't need to download the whole thing each time a car comes in.

I don't know how fast their internet is at our dealership. It has to be something halfways decent - the WiFi in the waiting room isn't half bad, and I can't imagine that what they are using in the shop is worse (more likely something like a separate VLAN on the same network). But there might be some rate limiting or throttling taking place on the remote server side of things.

If they had not yet done that (or my understanding of their process is incorrect), then the update process would indeed take longer.

48 hrs x ?k ID4s are you effing kidding me 😳 ?
Just FWIW my service advisor thinks it's 6 hours, which seems more in keeping with reality based on the reports from those who've had the update completed.

The way my service advisor put it was that "it depends on if the car feels like talking to the computer that day". Not technically precise, but I knew exactly what she meant. I was kind of hoping that any glitchy modules that couldn't take an update have already been replaced by now, but they are aware that these things might not always go smoothly. I guess we will know more when people have had a chance to take their cars in.

Ah the joys of owning a German engineered ID4 FE.

So after 3 years and I get an electrical error on my binnacle that says goto the dealership, I’m now responsible for the cost of repairs?

No more free towing when you’re underwater, on the highway.

I ran into the same thing when the OTA failed. Had to pay for the tow myself, but your normal auto insurance might cover it if you have that coverage.

I don't know what AAA gets you - if it is just the nearest garage, they are wasting your time.

As for the repairs, you still might be ok with the warranty.

AAA depends on the level of membership you pay for. The problem with VW towing or even insurance is they will almost only pay to tow you to the nearest 'authorized' outlet.

I am a Plus member, and have been for over 25 years. Plus gets you 100 miles of towing to a location of your choosing (not just the nearest dealer) for up to 4 tows a year. Premier ups that to 200 for one of those and 100 miles for the others. Classic, which is their cheapest, is only 5 miles. I pay about $165 a year for coverage for both my wife and I, though if you only cover 1 person it's cheaper.

There are other benefits that come with it if you use them. To be honest, I haven't much in recent years.

Ditto here with Plus. We also keep several paper maps current in the car.

I received a letter in the US mail today for 919A recall from VW. It says the update will take approx. 4 hours to complete. It also notes the dealer may need additional time to prepare and that the update may also contain enhancements/improvements to some other systems (though it does say what).

It also says if there are issues getting the repair completed in reasonable time to call them.

And lastly it contains a form to request reimbursement if you previously paid for a repair related to the condition directly from VW.

No similar updates yet for the door handles.
